No. 10 Bob Jones edges Decatur in OT

From Staff Reports

The Decatur High boys soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to Bob Jones, which is ranked 10th in the state.

Bob Jones scored first when Tyler McGuire and Aric Kearfot combined for a goal midway through the first half.

Decatur (4-3-2, 3-2 in Class 6A, Section 8) came back to tie the game when Raul Alanis headed home a ball from Jonathan Davis' free kick just before halftime. The game remained tied through the second half and two five-minute overtime periods.

As a section game, high school rules require that there be a winner so each team took five kicks from the penalty mark.

Decatur goalkeeper, Derek Humphries saved the first two shots that the Bob Jones players took. Decatur's Alanis, Jose Salgado and Humphries each made their shots as did three Bob Jones players — McGuire, Alex Ghoja and Zach Dowling.

A save by Bob Jones goalkeeper Michael MacLear and a shot off the crossbar by a Decatur player opened the door for Bob Jones. With the score tied at 3-3 the referees turned to sudden death shootout to determine the winner.

Conner Cappelletti scored first for Bob Jones, but Mason Hastie also made his kick to tie the game for the Red Raiders. The final score by the Patriots' McGuire was the difference as the Patriots' goalkeeper was able to block Decatur's final shot.

Decatur will host Madison Academy on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Ogle Stadium.

  • Bob Jones girls 2, Decatur 0: Two first-half goals by Meghan Bailey and Kristin Bunyard and a stingy defense that kept Decatur off the board were enough to provide the eighth-ranked Lady Patriots with the victory.

The loss dropped Decatur to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in the section.

  • Priceville boys 2, Arab 0: Priceville's defense, led by Adam Woodson with help from Robert Varner, Derrick Smith, Justin Anderson, Will Cancilla and Will White, shut out Arab. Lorand Dragu, the Bulldogs' goalkeeper, had four saves.

Ryan Kirschbaum scored twice for Priceville, which faces St. Bernard on the road Monday.

  • Arab girls 3, Priceville 1: The Lady Bulldogs earned a 1-1 tie at halftime by virtue of Jordan Crow's goal. However, Arab scored twice after intermission to earn the win.
  • Muscle Shoals boys 2, Brewer 1: Dustin Terry got a goal in the first half, and Ross Anderson scored on a penalty kick in overtime to lead Muscle Shoals (4-1).

Eric Vallejo scored a goal off an assist from Jeremy Talley midway through the second half for Brewer (3-3), and Sawyer McLemore notched 10 saves, forcing overtime.

Brewer will face Hartselle at home Tuesday.
