LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Wait for some success before canonizing President Obama

To The Daily: I read with interest the Jan. 29 letter from Jerry Ridling. Apart from his gratuitous and uncharitable characterizations of the former president and vice president, I’m delighted he has such unbridled hope in President Barack Obama.

While I didn’t vote for President Obama, he is my president and I hope and pray that our country will grow and prosper under his leadership over the next four or possibly eight years. I’ll support him on policies that I believe are sound and in the best interest of our country. On the other hand, on those I don’t agree with, I’ll offer my arguments.

My only problem with Mr. Ridling and other Obama supporters like him is how they extrapolate greatness to him. Heck, he’s only been in office for a few days and he and Mrs. Obama probably don’t have their bags unpacked. But the media and Obama followers are readying the mall for another monument.

Of course, most of this can be laid at the feet of the uncritical media in our country. According to Katie Couric of CBS news, President Obama is the most recognized person in the history of the world. Yet, and here’s the irony of the whole situation, he was probably the least scrutinized presidential candidate in American history.

I think it would be prudent of Mr. Ridling to defer judgment of our new president until a later time, preferably the end of his first term. Hopefully, by then he will have a record that will warrant all of the ballyhoo he has received over the past year.

Could not agree more. It seemed like all the things that should have been brought up during his candicacy, like his friendship with an admitted domestic terrorist, was completely ignored by the mainstream media. Don't believe me? Then "Google" it for yourself readers. Every time a questionable association of Obama's would come up, he would make some lame excuse and the media would say no more about it.

Already in his presidency, he has hired former Clinton staffers. Does that sound like change? He has introduced another huge spending bill. Does that sound like the change he promised? He nominated a Treasury Secretary that owed the IRS money, and somehow that guy got through, but his Health and Human Services nominee had the same issue, but finally had to withdraw his name. People, the guy in charge of our money owes more in back taxes then what many in America make in 5 years! I see no change. I only see the same old D.C. politics going on. Only now, our new President gets up in front of his party to mock and make jokes about those in Congress that disagree with him.

MLK's dream was that we would one day judge a man by his character, not be the color of his skin. Unfortunately, there are too many people that have admitted to voting for Obama just because of his skin, just as there were probably others that voted against him for the same reason. People, both reasons were wrong and both reasons trample MLK's dream. To also give Obama a pass because of his skin color, because we are afraid to be politically incorrect, is also not what Dr. King hoped for. If we truly want to realize "The Dream" and also what Christ taught us about loving each other, all races need to stop judging a man by his color, but instead judge him by his actions. Supporting a man just because of his color is just as bad as being against him just because of his color.
