Decatur girls rally against Hartselle

Hartselle High’s Eva Heinrichs and Katie Kilgore won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, but Decatur swept the rest of the singles matches for a 6-3 win Thursday in local tennis action.

Heinrichs won her match 10-6, and Kilgore won 11-9. Decatur’s Burgoyne Fite won 10-8 at No. 3 singles, while Annie Suggs followed with a 10-3 victory in a No. 4 singles match.

At No. 5 singles, Decatur’s Sarah Fite won 10-1, and Sarah Sherrill enjoyed a 10-2 victory in No. 6 singles. Mary Katherine Breland, Decatur’s No. 7 singles player, won 10-2, as did Wiley Underwood at No. 8 singles.

In doubles action, Decatur’s Mary V. Sherrill teamed with Emily Suggs for a 10-5 win in No. 1 doubles. Burgoyne Fite and Sarah Sherrill won 10-3 at No. 2 doubles, and Breland and Underwood won 10-3 at No. 4 doubles. Shelley Scarborough and Katie Varwig’s 11-9 victory in No. 3 doubles was Hartselle’s lone doubles win.

Cullman girls 8, Hartselle 1: Katie Kilgore topped Katie Sharpton 10-8 in No. 1 singles for Hartselle’s only win of the match in a loss to Cullman on Monday.

Shelley Scarborough fell 10-3 in No. 2 singles, while Taylor Bean lost 10-2 in No. 3 singles. Rachel Wiley came up short, 10-7, in No. 4 singles, followed by Teryn Swader’s 10-3 loss at No. 5 singles. Anna Harrison lost 10-2 in No. 6 singles.

In doubles, Eva Heinrichs and Kilgore lost 10-5 at No. 1. Scarborough and Varwig lost 10-5 in No. 2 doubles, and Wiley and Bean also lost 10-5 in No. 3 doubles.

Cullman boys 7: Hartselle 2: Hartselle’s Brandon McNutt won 10-2 at No. 2 singles, while Daryn Raley, the Tigers No. 6 singles player, picked up a 10-7 win.

At No. 1 singles, Patrick Connell lost 10-7. Scott Dukes dropped his No. 3 singles match 10-2, while Sam Fleischman followed with a 10-7 loss in No. 4 singles. Chris Schaffer lost 10-5 in No. 5 singles.

Connell and McNutt fell 7-5 in No. 1 doubles, while Hartselle’s teams of Dukes and Kyle St. Amand and Schaffer and Raley each lost 10-5.

Hartselle girls 5, Arab 4: Despite dropping three of the first four singles matches, Hartselle won the last four in a match played Feb. 12.

Scarborough won 7-5 at No. 3 singles after Heinrichs and Kilgore fell in the previous matches. After Taylor Bean lost at No. 4 singles, Rachel Wiley, Teryn Swader, Katie Varwig and Mary E. Hilliar recorded wins.

In doubles action, Heinrichs and Kilgore won 11-9 at No. 1 doubles. Bean and Wiley lost at No. 2 doubles, but Scarborough and Varwig countered with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles.

Hartselle boys 6, Arab 0: Cobbell won 10-6 in No. 1 doubles, while McNutt and Dukes followed with 8-2 and 8-1 wins in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Raley won 8-4 at No. 4 doubles, and Schaffer cruised to an 8-0 victory at No. 5 singles.

St. Amand won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

In doubles action, Connell and McNutt won 8-1 at No. 1. The duo of Dukes and Raley won easily at No. 2, 8-1, while Alex Pettey and Fleischman won by forfeit in No. 3 doubles.
