School pitches incubator plan

Decatur school officials have offered to take control to the city’s largely defunct Business Incubator building.

During a City Council work session Wednesday, Superintendent Sam Houston pitched a plan for the school system to take over the facility, moving its career-technical classes there from both high schools.

In return, he said, the school system would take over maintenance, utilities and upkeep expenses.

But according to city officials, the facility still owes the city $26,800 from a loan that was supposed to be paid back through rent at the facility. Houston said he would discuss with city officials options for satisfying that debt.

As of Wednesday, the facility still housed four businesses, according to city officials.
