Neill helps Decatur
win pair in baseball
Decatur High junior Ben Neill had a hand in a good day for the Red Raiders on the diamond Saturday. Decatur won two games and Neill picked up the first-game win, striking out three in a 7-2 win over Curry. The Red Raiders put one of their top competitors on the mound and Neill pitched a shutout through six innings. He also helped his own cause by hitting three singles. “He’s doing a great job,” Decatur head coach Steve Netherton said. Will Dennis had a single and a double, playing right field for the Red Raiders after pitching a 10-2 complete game win over East Limestone earlier in the day. Daniel Deffenbaugh caught both games for the Red Raiders. With the wins, Decatur improved to 7-7 on the season. “It was a complete team effort,” Netherton said. “We made the routine plays.” Decatur doesn’t play again until facing Florence at home Friday at 4 p.m. Decatur 10, East Limestone 2: Dennis pitched a complete game for the Red Raiders, scattering three hits and striking out five. Decatur’s Neill and Reid Cauthen delivered two singles each in the win. The score was tied 2-2 after East Limestone’s Nathan Dumont hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning and a single Priceville 9, East Limestone 1: Jarrod Clark pitched a one-hitter and struck out three in seven innings for Priceville. Priceville’s Kody Etheredge hit two doubles in the contest. Andrew Starkey had a double and a single, and Justin West hit two singles. East Limestone’s sole hit came in the second inning when Corey Dunn singled and Jared Laxson scored for the Indians (7-3) after reaching on a walk. Priceville 6, Curry 1: Dalton Lorance pitched seven innings for the Bulldogs, striking out three, hit a single, and drove in two runs in a top all-around effort. Teammate Kyle Bunnell had a single and a double, and Stephen Starkey hit a double and drove in two runs for Priceville (8-4). East Limestone 19, Buckhorn 15: In Friday night action, the Indians beat Buckhorn on the road. In extra base hits for East Limestone, Corey Dunn had a single and two doubles in the offensive explosion. Seth Hughes homered and added a single. Daniel Tucker and Nathan Dumont each had a double and single. Jack Cruse also had a double. Dumont was the winning pitcher for the Indians going 5 2/3 innings, striking out nine. Athens Bible 5, Hackleburg 0: Jordan Pugh gave up five hits and struck out seven in the complete game shutout for the Trojans in a game at Vina on Saturday. Jacob Hagewood and Logan McWhirter each had two hits for ABS. Will Chumbley, Connor Brown and Jonathan Winland each singled in the victory. Athens Bible 9, Vina 1: A.J. Price got the pitching decision and had two doubles and a single at the plate for the Trojans (8-0). Winland had a double and two singles, Brown added a pair of singles. Pugh doubled and Will King, Chumbley and Hagewood each singled. Athens Bible will host Paint Rock on Monday. Hatton 12, Shoals Christian 10: Senior Darren Hand had a homer, double and single and three RBIs for the Hornets. Chase Martin added a two-run homer and Micah Johnson, Zeke Nichols and Caleb Hatton each had two hits. Conner Pierce was the winning pitcher and David Mims picked up the save. Hatton 14, Lauderdale County 2: Johnson had three RBIs with a two-run homer and double for the winners. Mims contributed three singles and one RBI. Austin Long, Casey Parker and Martin each had two hits. Parker was the winning pitcher. Hatton (5-7) hosts Cherokee at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Danville 10-22, East Lawrence 8-2: Parker Hogan had a two-run homer and single in the first game and added another homer in the second game in the sweep. Hogan was the winning pitcher in the first game. In the opener, Jacob Fields had a double, two singles and four RBIs and Matt Vest added a single. In the second game, Vest was the winning pitcher and helped at the plate with two singles. Cole Veazey had two singles and a double and Fields collected a single and double for Danville (8-0). Austin 14, Athens 4: Trey Richard got the win on the mound for Austin. Kyle Chronister and Luke Mould were leaders at the plate for Athens with two singles apiece. Hazel Green 17, Athens 13: Tyler Dorning’s two-run homer, two singles and a double led the Golden Eagles in a high scoring contest. Teammate Kyle Chronister also hit a two-run homer and a double. Jackson Burgreen added a double for Athens Softball Wetumpka 4, Austin 2: Melissa Thompson launched a two-run homer in the second inning for the Lady Black Bears only runs of the game in the Auburn Invitational on Saturday. Lauren Lindsey had a pair of singles and Amy Anderson had a single in the loss. St. James 3, Austin 2: Tara May and Libby Ann Olinger each had two singles for Austin. Anderson and Haley Barnette each singled in the game. Austin plays Friday in the Wallace State-Hanceville Tournament.
