LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Not concerned that sheriff keeps money instead of buying food for inmates

To The Daily: I have read about all I can stand without responding to the totally biased reporting of The Decatur Daily.

The voters are not stupid, and don’t think for one minute that we can’t see through your attempt to hurt Sheriff Greg Bartlett publicly. I live in the Hartselle area and we know the whole food issue has been The Daily’s and Stacy George’s obsession for years. We don’t care if the sheriff made money from the overages.

Sheriffs in 54 other counties do it this way and you never hear anything from the media in those counties making such a fuss out of the situation. So why is it such a problem in Morgan County?

It’s state law — period. We don’t think inmates should be fed better than our school children and nursing home residents. This law may or may not need to be changed, but beating our sheriff over the head with it day after day is nothing but political.

We read and see on the news about all the meth labs and murders being solved in Morgan County, and we didn’t see that before he became our sheriff. You should be reporting about all the good Sheriff Bartlett and his office have done in our communities.

The sheriff and his deputies have made Morgan County a better and safer place to live.

This country needs more sheriffs like ours.

Speak for yourself, not everybody from Hartselle feels the way you do, I for one, And I know a lot of other people from Hartselle thinks that what he did was wrong. I think that everbody will rember this comes election time, HE WILL BE VOTED OUT.

AMEN to Ms. Wright. GET OFF of BARTLETT'S BACK! We are all SICK of your biased reporting. Our Sheriff is doing NOTHING wrong. If it becomes wrong, then he will stop, as will all of the other Sheriffs in the state. Go pick on Billy Jackson or Gary Revves on the City Counsel for a change.

I used to think Stacy George was grandstanding also. That was until a couple of years ago when I started hearing about and actually seeing some of the crooked things being some of the Morgan County commissioners and Greg Bartlett. Not long after that, there was several integrity issues about some board members and the sheriff's actions. Now it seems like every time I turn around, I hear of shady business being conducting out of the Morgan County Courthouse. Now, I realize that Stacy George was just having to scream loud enough so that maybe the public would pay attention to how corrupt the system had become in Morgan County.

Was Bartlett doing anything illegal with the food issue? No. However, with the amount of money he was able to put in his pocket, especially given the small amount he had to feed each inmate to begin with, it does raise some legitimate questions about the integrity of his actions. An old law was being taken advantage of for personal gain. I don't have a bleeding heart for prisoners and I think prison time should be tough. However, I do have a problem with a public official lining his pockets with federal and state taxpayer money to pad their salary instead of using it what it was meant for.

Then again, as I said, that is just one of many less than credible issues that have come up about the sheriff. It would not surprise me one bit if there is even more bad publicity to surface about Bartlett before his term ends.

If these people who agree with Bartlett & believe he is right, then I think they should agree to spend 6 months in jail to see how you can be affected by diet! Do you think you could live on 1 corn dog per day????????? Think before you speak.

They weren't getting just one corndog a day Jim, they were getting three.

What i seen being put on the inmates trays on T.V. looked like more than enough food for someone who burns very little calories laying on a bed all day watching T.V. or playing cards. Its not like they are out there working burning calories. It was more food than you get in a hospital or at a public school. Now that may have been a show being put on but i know for a fact the thing i seen on T.V. was MORE than enough food. They are inmates. If they don't want to eat that food then all they have to do is not break the law and they want have to eat it. The Sheriff is breaking no laws. What about the sheriff in mobile that made over $300,000.00 in one year. perfectly legal.

what the sheriff should have done was sit in jail for a while and held his ground and got an emergency appeal of his case out of that crazy judges court. Any judge who will take the word of a thug over a law enforcement officer i have no respect for.

Plenty of food for a criminal who does not burn hardly any calories. a sheriff who has NOT broken any laws.

Why are these people having to eat this food? Because they are in jail.

Why are they in jail? Because they broke the law against the citizens of Morgan County.

How can you keep from having to eat this food? Don't break the law against the citizens of Morgan County.

See how simple that is.

All you have to do is be a good citizen and neighbor, go to work and take care of your family and you want have to eat corndogs three times a day.

they are not burning the average number of calories a normal person would burn so therefore they do not need the same amout of food as a normal person working 8 to 10 hours a day.

I agree with Craig. You people in Morgan County need to wake up. Your Sheriff and his dept. are doing a great job. As long as the law is on the books allowing the extra food money to be kept by the sheriff, then SO BE IT !!!!!!!! If you complaining citizens want a change in government or in the Sheriff''s dept., then get out there and run for the office. If not, try to be a part of the solution and not part of the problem.

David from Decatur

It is amazing how ignorant some of the people in Morgan County are. But I guess that is what would explain why Stacy George was voted out. Greg Bartlett is as crooked as anyone in the Morgan County jail and only the most uninformed or "clueless" citizen would defend his actions.

If anyone wonders why Alabama is rated 49th, you need not wonder anymore. It is things like this that keep Alabama only one point above Mississippi. This made the national news; so all those folks that may have considered coming here on a BRAC move probably are changing their minds. I’m pretty sure Dueling Banjos keeps playing in their heads.

Whether it is law or not; the fact remains that it is just immoral to treat another human that way. Come on we feed our dogs better than this ! If you think the sheriff had a right to that money (your tax money) then you have been fooled very well and probably don't mind the big bonuses being paid at AIG with your tax money either.

Just because it is legal doesn't make it right. Abortion is legal and I bet that some of you people don't think it is right! Bartlett is dirty and I can't wait until we vote again!

So glad I don't live in Decatur anymore. Some "inmates" are awaiting trial and didn't have the money to bond out. (Innocent until proven guilty?what?)They are not given medications per doctors' instructions. They have a nurse who administers medication twice a day, period. Some medications, prescribed by a doctor are not even allowed. Bartlett says he paid income taxes on the income he made from starving prisoners, did he pay taxes on the food that was donated? I doubt it. I sure wouldn't want to spend any time there, but remember that innocent people are incarcerated sometimes. And to the person who saw the amount and type of food shown on tv - they KNEW they were going to be on, duh!

Bartlett is no better than the thieves he put in jail. He knew what teh job paid before he ran for office. It;s too bad the Judge didn't keep him for a month and feed him noting but corn dogs for the entire month and charge him for anything else he wanted like mustard, ketchup or sugar and lemon for his tea or coffee. They should have put him on bread and water for a month. But he wimped out and said he would not take anymore money. That was so humane of him to agree to that!! He obviously can't take what he dishes out. COME ON ELECTION TIME!!! It's itme for this jerk to be put on the street!!! Thanks Decatur Daily for keeping us informed of this criminal!!
