LETTER TO THE EDITOR
File class action for state bailout of PACT
To The Daily: All the plans to use Alabama taxpayers to bail out PACT investors are wrong, and using Alabama children by stealing cash-deficient funds from the education budget indicates excessive arrogance and total absence of shame. Vision for this program included money from future investors to be used to pay early investors with positive stock investments to keep the program solvent and profitable. This was overly heroic and failed to demonstrate reality. The vision failed to consider massive tuition increases that did become reality. Consequently, the program is crippled. While it is apparent that these investors desire a bailout, it is not apparent that taxpayers should be the bailers. They do not have funding to provide for necessities. Alabama teachers using personal funds to provide classroom supplies is but one example. Unlike the federal government, Alabama cannot simply print money. It can only take money from under-funded budgets that may experience proration without significant economic improvement. If Alabama has no legal obligation in this matter, it may elect to assume moral responsibility. If so, it must not be discriminatory. It must include all Alabamians whose IRA and personal broker investment accounts have been decimated. If not, discrimination should certainly be an invitation for class action lawsuits on behalf of the investors who were victims of the discrimination. Edward H. Kantor

To Mr. Kantor,
Obviously you didn't participate in PACT. Those who did were sold a bill of goods, promising kids a pre-paid tuition, at an affordable price. We were not told that tuitions would increase, nor were we infomed it would be an issue. We were promised our children could attend college at a set price, which we paid the total amount in cash. All we ask is the State of Alabama make good on the promise.
It is unfortunate that you may have lost your #%& in the stock market. However, we were promised written and verbal contracts with the State of Alabama to provide a college education in any state supported institution.
You should consult another broker and seek better investment advice.
