2 men charged in Lawrence
with home-invasion robbery
MOULTON — Two men were in Lawrence County Jail on Thursday in connection with a home-invasion armed robbery of an 86-year-old Hatton man. Sheriff Gene Mitchell said James Floyd Edwin Reed, 45, of 2315 Piney Woods Road in Leighton and William Loyd Copeland, 29, of 4903 Lawrence County 108 in Town Creek are charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree burglary. Investigators found Reed late Wednesday night hiding at a motel in Cullman and took him into custody without incident with help from Cullman Police, Mitchell said. Investigators found Copeland at a residence on Lawrence County 343 in Hatton, he said. The men committed the robbery Wednesday morning at a residence on Lawrence County 236 in Hatton, the sheriff said. Mitchell said investigators determined that Copeland drove Reed to the victim’s residence, where Reed forced his way inside and subdued and bound the victim before taking his wallet and cash. Mitchell said Wednesday that someone entered the home by posing as a motorist in need of gas. Both men confessed, he said. The men were in Lawrence County Jail on Thursday with no bond set. Capt. Tim McWhorter said Reed and Copeland have prior convictions but haven’t been convicted of anything as serious as the robbery Wednesday. Reed had prior convictions for drug-related offenses, McWhorter said. Mitchell said that “investigators worked tirelessly last night following up on leads, and as a result of their hard work and perseverance, were able to gather information needed to link the two suspects to the crimes.”

Sounds like great detective work by the Sheriff and his men. Congradulations on a job well done.
It's unfortunate the older man didn't have GLOCK and killed them both. He would have saved the tax payers money and if they go to jail, that would save prison space and the money to feed and house them. I also think Sheriff Mitchell should run for Sheriff of Morgan County. Excellent job Lawrence County Sheriff's Department!!
