Austin High grad heads to West Point

The United States Military Academy has accepted Austin High School graduate Marquis Morris.

The 19-year-old reports in two weeks after finishing a year at the West Point, N.Y., academy’s prep school in May.

Morris was one of 800 students accepted to the prep school, after he graduated from Austin in 2008. He said about 80 percent of this class moves up to the academy.

After a “difficult summer” of 2008 that included cadet camp and basic training, Morris said his daily schedule consisted of classes, physical training and volunteering.

His volunteer work at Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, a food bank and Special Olympics earned him two U.S. Army achievement awards.

Morris said he plans to major in Spanish and either business management or civil engineering. The son of Leonard and Sonia Morris, he was chief executive officer for the Austin JROTC and a star football player.
