A Holly Pond man is being held in the Morgan County Jail on $250,000 bail amid allegations he sexually abused a 6-year-old boy.

Gary Rodgers Burkhardt, 56, was charged Tuesday with sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12, said Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett. Authorities said they believe he is also responsible for similar crimes in Cullman and Marshall counties and in Texas. Investigators did not say if these alleged crimes included different victims or the same child.

Bartlett said Burkhardt’s arrest comes after a month long investigation into allegations he abused the 6-year-old boy at a Double Mountain Road home in Baileyton.

The department received a report of the abuse May 22, he said.

“Investigators Jodie King, Pete Taylor and Brian Langham gathered testimonial evidence from numerous sources and then confronted Burkhardt about the alleged abuse,” Bartlett said.

Investigators interviewed Burkhardt, and he admitted he committed numerous incidents of sex abuse in different jurisdictions, Bartlett said. However, Burkhardt did not specifically admit to any abuse he was accused of in Morgan County, he said.

“Investigators were convinced he had in fact committed abuse here,” he said. “They continued to build a case against him.”

Burkhardt agreed to sit down with Investigator King again Tuesday for another interview, Bartlett said.

The statements made during this second exchange gave investigators enough probable cause to arrest him, he said.

“Evidence of similar crimes committed in Cullman and Marshall counties and also Harlington, Texas, were uncovered by this investigation,” Bartlett said.

Investigators have turned over this evidence to the law enforcement agencies in those jurisdictions, he said.

According to jail records, Burkhardt provided jailers with the address of 584 Double Mountain Road in Baileyton. It is not clear if this is the same address where the alleged sexual abuse took place. Burkhardt remained on suicide watch at the jail due to threats he made to officers during his arrest, according to jail records.

Stop watching him and give him a rope. If he don't know how to hang himself, HELP him !!!

Make sure he goes to jail where they like to get their hands on a child abuser. They will give him a dose of his own medicine. Even the "gangs" don't like child abusers in there. Teh down side is we will have to feed, clothe, and house him at our expense. Maybe the best thing is to just find him a place to sit, as in the electric chair!!

Good Job Sheriff Bartlett and Investigators of the Sheriff's Office. Way to keep these losers off the streets! Thank you Daily for printing the good work of the Sheriff's office.

Boohoo he might kill himself. I hope he gets what's coming to him.
