Ervin claims Miss Point Mallard title
Meredith Ervin of Huntsville took home the Miss Point Mallard title and a $3,300 cash scholarship at the Spirit of America Festival on Saturday night. The 21-year-old senior dance major at Birmingham-Southern College performed a ballet en pointe to “Rodeo” during Saturday’s pageant at Point Mallard Park. “I have always wanted to be Miss Point Mallard,” said Ervin, who has competed on the Spirit of America stage several times. She has been in the Miss Alabama Pageant three times with the titles of Miss Birmingham-Southern, Miss Tennessee Valley and Miss Leeds. “This is such a great area, and there is so much I can do here,” said Ervin, who hopes to go into elementary schools with her platform, “Protecting You/Protecting Me.” She is working to prevent underage alcohol abuse by targeting first- through fifth-graders. The daughter of Norm and Debbie Ervin of Huntsville, she hopes to attend pharmacy school. The first runner-up, Susannah Higgins of Calera, got a $1,000 cash scholarship, and the second runner-up, Nicole Jordan of Memphis, got a $700 scholarship to use at The University of Alabama. Third runner-up Barri Elizabeth Stephenson of Hoover received a $600 scholarship. Fourth runner-up Raquel Martin of Prattville got a $450 scholarship. Other gifts and prizes from local sponsors were also awarded. The talent award was a tie, with Ervin sharing with Decatur native Anna Laura Bryan, a singer. Jordan won the evening gown and community service awards, while Higgins won the swimsuit category. Kaley Hayden of Livingston took Miss Congeniality. See Also:
