Mallard Fox West to get sewer, water

Mallard Fox West Industrial Park in Lawrence County expects to begin installing sewer and water pipes in six weeks, the Morgan County Economic Development Association learned Tuesday.

Luke Slaton, executive director of the Lawrence County Industrial Development Board, said the county received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approval for the water and sewer system and expects to begin soon.

Most industrial prospects expect sewer, water and other infrastructure to be in place before they agree to locate in an area.

Slaton said the park also will design a new entrance. The Alabama Department of Transportation is reviewing a plan for the entrance, which would include a deceleration lane on Alabama 20.

EDA President Jeremy Nails said industrial prospects remain bleak due to the economy. He said five industries have looked at Morgan County since March, and some existing industries are showing an interest in expansions.

“There are small indications that things are turning around,” Nails said.

With industrial inquiries down, Nails said, he and his staff are focusing on coordinating county marketing and work force development and assisting existing industry.
