3 apply for Terry’s seat on Lawrence Commission
MOULTON — The Lawrence County Republican Party chairman and the father of the late County Commissioner John Terry have expressed interest in filling the District 2 commission seat, said Gov. Bob Riley’s communications director. Another applicant is Jimmy “Darrin” Parrish of Town Creek. The seat became vacant when John Terry, a Democrat, died last month. Parrish is a heavy equipment operator for the city of Decatur. John Terry’s father, John Wayne Terry, retired from Reynolds Metal Co. in 1998, according to the governor’s office. Attempts to reach Parrish and the other applicants, county Republican Party Chairman Danny Kerby and John Wayne Terry, were unsuccessful. Kerby, 50, is a conservative Republican and Wolf Springs resident, according to his Facebook page. A 1977 graduate of Hatton High School, Kerby is a production supervisor at 3M. He is involved in an effort to begin a program for career development for youths and represents Lawrence County in state work-force development. John Terry won his first term in 2006, when he defeated Kerby with almost 65 percent of the vote. Authorities found Terry, 42, dead in his bed Sept. 19. Date not disclosed The governor’s office didn’t disclose when Riley would make the appointment.

Kerby lost big in 2006, why should he be considered?
A from:
So what you are saying is that he should be punished for running for public office. Are you saying that if you ever want to be considered for an appointment to a position you should not run for that position. That is 100% stupid.
I think what A is saying is that since Kerby lost big in 2006 obviously the people in District 2 didn't want him to represent them.
i hate when a death brings out the worst in people. if that many people in kerbys home district voted against him, there must be something wrong him in his thinking, or attitude, or political views. the election is next year, why not let the guys father finish out the term, and let him finish what the people of that district elected his son to do.
I agree mythbuster. I believe Pennington received more votes in the runoff than Kerby in the General.
Political elections do not always elect the most qualified to office. If I am not mistaken Mr. Kerby ran as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic county and garnered 35% of the vote. I can also say that Kerby is not nearly as popular a name as the Terry name. The article says Kerby has been active in career development, which is sorely needed in Lawrence county. I have heard that Mr Kerby attended meetings regularly for 2-3 years before ever running for office. I have also heard that he worked his way through the ranks to supervisor where he works. A question that needs be asked is what qualifications does Mr Terry's father bring to the commission? If you were on trial would you want your attorney's parent to represent you in court were he or she unable to be there. I think not.
speaking for myself, i never injected what "i heard" into my comments. one point in your post is correct, "elections do not always elect the most qualified to office", this also would be true involving an appointment. not long ago, and not far away, several politians were put in jail for "buying" votes, including a judge, and a sheriff. i do not see the reasoning being stated that, your being in charge of a production line at a plant, has anything to do with being on the county commision. as far as attending the commision meetings, i have been to serveral, including, morgan, lawrence, winston, and cullman countys. i do not feel that gives me a leg up on serving the people of my county, it just keeps me informed as to the happenings in our local goverment. my sole point was that, this death is going to bring out the worst in people. and i think it has just started. makes me kind of wonder what agenda, any of the three have in mind, the best for them, or the best for the people. who ever gets the position i wish them luck, and that they dont forget that a man had to die for them to have the seat. try not to disrespect the office.
Does anyone else notice how this article jumps all over the place? I have no idea which one of them is best qualified, but you don't even read the third candidate's name until the 5th paragraph. You can read he is the Chairman of the Lawrence County Republican Party, but it doesn't tell you his name until much later. It only says that John Wayne Terry is retired from Reynolds. How about the fact that he has lived in that district most of his life. How about telling the age of all three candidates? This is one of the most poorly written articles I have seen lately. Just a shame that this is what many voters will have to choose by. There are many people who don't regularly get out of the house and only read the paper. So, this is how they get their knowledge concerning candidates. What a shame.
Of course Riley was going to appoint a republican even if he isn't the most qualified. Kerby was defeated badly in 2006, hopefully (and probably) he will get beat as bad by a Democrat in 2010!
