TOWN CREEK — A shooting early Wednesday sent one Lawrence County man to the hospital and another to jail without bail.

Town Creek police Chief Jerry Garrett said Terenza Topps, 35, of 268 Lawrence 220, Moulton, is charged with first-degree burglary and criminal mischief.

The police chief said Topps is accused of shooting Isaac Sellers, 29, of 163 Parker Road, Moulton, during the altercation.

The chief said the fight occurred about 1 a.m. inside a residence at Creek­view Apartments on Alabama 20 in Town Creek.

Garrett said the 33-year-old woman who lives at the apartment is Topps’ girlfriend and an acquaintance of Sellers.

Denied entrance

“From what we’ve been able to find out, Sellers was at the girl’s apartment when Topps got there,” Garrett said.

“(Topps) knocked on the door, and when the female saw who it was, she wouldn’t let him in.”

Garrett said Topps tried to kick in the door but failed.

“He went around to the bedroom window, tore off the screen and broke in through the window,” Garrett said.

“Once he got inside, he confronted Sellers and they started fighting.”

He said Sellers pulled out a gun during the fight.

Lengthy altercation

“Apparently, they continued fighting for some time,”?Garrett said.

“During the fight, Sellers was shot twice in the hand with his own gun.”

He said the woman was not injured.

Nor was her 6-year-old son, who was inside the residence.

Garrett said Sellers ran out of the apartment after the shooting and went to a friend’s residence at nearby Town Creek Apartments.

Topps got in his car and left the area. Courtland police stopped him a short time later on Alabama 20.

Authorities said Sellers is in Decatur General Hospital being treated for the injuries.

Topps is being held in the Lawrence County Jail.
