Alabama gubernatorial candidate Bradley Byrne says his campaign is like no other because he is building a grassroots base in every county.

Byrne released the names of his Morgan County campaign team at the courthouse Tuesday. Most were prominent in Gov. Bob Riley’s campaign.

Byrne said he has formed teams in St. Clair and Mobile counties. The Morgan County team is his third.

David Scott, an accountant with Tucker, Scott and Wates and vice president of the state Republican Party, is chairman of Byrne’s Morgan campaign.

Attorney Barnes Lovelace is chairman of finance. Steering committee members are Stratton Orr, small business owner; Britt Sexton, chief executive officer of Sexton Inc.; Jimmy Ray Smith, a local jeweler; Sara Jo Hosey, event coordinator; Renee Fields, Hartselle chairwoman; Julie Clausen, phone bank/volunteer coordinator and Adonis Bailey, voter registration coordinator.

Quality people

“I am truly humbled by the caliber of the team of men and women who have stepped up and agreed to work with us,” Byrne said. “Each of them has proven their commitment to building a better Alabama, and their support brings a great level of respect and energy to our campaign.”

He believes the team’s effort will be crucial as his message about issues such as ethics reform is circulated.

After the press conference, Byrne said if he is elected the first thing he will do is “call a special session to go over ethics reform.”

“We have to address that, especially considering what has happened with convictions in the college system and the latest conviction with the mayor of Birmingham (Larry Langford),” he said.

“We also have to address education reform, reinventing technical education in our high schools,” he added.

After the courthouse announcement, Byrne attended a meeting with the Morgan County Federation of Republican Women.
