Somerville cop charged with assault
A Somerville police officer was suspended from his job indefinitely after turning himself in to authorities Monday on assault and criminal mischief charges. Jamie Whitt V, 33, of 911 Gravel Ridge Road, Somerville, was released the same day from the Morgan County Jail on $600 bail, according to jail records. A man obtained a warrant against Whitt, a two-year veteran of the department, for third-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief, Somerville Police Chief Joe Mann said. “He was on medical leave, but he’s been suspended today, pending an investigation,” Mann said Tuesday. Mann called Whitt a “good officer” and declined to comment about the alleged incident that put Whitt in jail. The warrant was unavailable Tuesday at the Morgan County circuit clerk’s office. Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett said the arrest stemmed from an altercation between Whitt and his ex-wife’s new boyfriend. It was unclear when the alleged fight occurred or where. While attending a party, Whitt noticed his ex-wife’s vehicle drive by, occupied by her and her new boyfriend. Whitt chased after the couple, and a fight ensued between the men, Bartlett said. During the altercation, a window in Whitt’s ex-wife’s vehicle was broken. Mann said Whitt was off-duty at the time, and his patrol car was not involved in the incident. Morgan County Circuit Court records show a divorce was finalized Sept. 14 between Whitt and Jami Whitt. Whitt had worked for the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department for nine years before becoming a Somerville police officer, Mann said. “Things will come out later that will shed some light on this situation,” Mann said.

WOW !!!!!!!! A wonderful outstanding officer arrested???? Tell me it's not true!!!
Yes I've known Mr. Whitt a very long time and he is a WONDERFUL person and officer. I just hope is situation is taken care of and he can still serve as a police officer for Somerville.
LET US WAIT TO HEAR THE FULL STORY. THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT BEEN DIVORCED OR LOST A LOVED ONE---JUST SHUT UP--- RONALD AND RAINY THIS IS NOT MEANT FOR YOU BUT FOR THOSE WHO WILL FOLLOW LATER AND SHOOT THEIR MOUTHS OFF AND THEY NOT ONE BIT OF WHAT HAS RECENTLY GONE THRU THIS MANS MIND AND LIFE.THERE I FEEL BETTER ANYWAY. PS--HAVENT ANY IDEA WHO HE IS.
It doesn't matter what the rest of the story is. An officer of the law should be able to restrain himself. If he can't, then he does not need to be in law enforcement. I don't care how good of a guy he is.
Sorry Scott, but the man was off duty and did not do anything to cause disgrace to the uniform. His personel life is his to live.
Innocent until PROVEN guilty is what people need to realize. IF this man is found guilty of aasualt and its a felony he will loose his job. but no one should pass judgement on him until he is found guilty IF he is found guilty
great point about those who have not been divorced... Just a couple of hints already released make a perfectly understandable reason for Officer Whitt to lose his composure. The divorce is newly finalized, the ex- and new boyfriend "drive by" a place where the Officer is attending a party... Some of you actually believe the Officer went after the couple... Not likely. It's too bad Officer Whitt couldn't have filed against his ex- and her boyfriend first. I just hope everything works out-- we need all the uniforms we can get in the middle of this meth crisis and it being in full swing in the Somerville area.
if he can't control himself out of uniform, it is just a matter of time before it happens while in uniform.. just sayin.
assault is assault. what ever the reason...
Tammy, what if he was a minister, how much coverge would he get then ? He was charged, not found guilty yet. What if the boy friend hasseled Whitt , is he to turn the other cheek ?
