Bingo ruling sets stage for showdown
The rules the Alabama Supreme Court handed down last week for bingo sound like those for the old-fashioned game played around kitchen tables. The ruling against electronic bingo stands to be major trouble for the casino-like operations that continue to sprout across Alabama. The court ruled Friday on the 900 machines seized at White Hall, saying they operate “almost exactly like slot machines.” Slot machines are illegal in Alabama, yet Country Crossing near Dothan will open Dec. 1 with 1,700 electronic bingo machines in an $87 million project that includes restaurants, a place to stay and big-name entertainment. Victoryland, 15 miles east of Montgomery, recently opened a 300-room luxury hotel and plans more expansion at the one-time dog track that now has 6,000 electronic bingo machines. The ruling, of course, will be appealed and could take years to resolve. In the meanwhile, the rush to put electronic bingo machines accelerates. The people investing this money wouldn’t do so without a backup plan if White Hall loses its appeal. What that plan is should be a major topic in next year’s legislative races. The Legislature should ban electronic bingo or control and tax it heavily.

why is alabama so backward, the people who want to gamble, are going to, whether they have to drive to tunica, or biloxi, or tennessee, or florida, or georgia. all this does is move the tax revenue from our state to the others, but we still have people who want to gamble. how can this make any sence to anyone. they should jump all over another SIN tax like the one on tobacco, and alcohol. it would give them much more money to steal, and the people who gamble will be happy. and if you dont gamble, you still get the benifit of more tax revenue brought into the states pockets.
I AGREE ALABAMA JUST WANTS TO COMPLAIN THEY HAVE NO MONEY THEN PUT OUT THE GAMBLING THAT COULD BRING IN MORE THAN THEY THINK IT WOULD. BUT AS THEY SAY IGNORANCE CAN BE CURED STUPID IS FOREVER! PEOPLE IN ALABAMA WILL CONTINUE TO DRIVE TO GAMBLE WHEN WE WAKE UP AND LET IT BE LEGAL IN ALABAMA PEOPLE WILL SEE ITS BENEFITS. IT IS JUST LIKE A COUNTY GOING WET. DID IT STOP PEOPLE FROM DRIVING TO GET IT? NO! IT IS JUST A BUNCH OF GOODIE TOO SHOES THAT SAY NO WAY. BUT THEIR KIDS ARE DOING IT AND WANTING TO DO IT AND THEY CANT HANDLE IT. ITS OK WITH ME IF THEY DONT I CAN GIVE ANOTHER STATE MY MONEY ITS THEIR LOSS!!! LET THE PEOPLE VOTE AND ACTUALLY COUNT IT NOT LET IT GET SHOVED UNDER A TABLE!
