LETTER TO THE EDITOR

It’s up to city to ensure its towing companies comply with fee structure

To The Daily: The city of Decatur impounds vehicles belonging to individuals who do not have valid licenses. The towing companies in the rotation are supposed to charge $75, plus $20 per day after the first day for storage. If a wreck is involved, the towing companies may charge $125, plus $20 per day after the first day.

Some of these companies are charging more than the city of Decatur has approved. These violations have been brought to the attention of the attorney representing Decatur, but nothing is being done to end the breaking of the law set by the city.

If a towing company violates this law, I feel it is up to the city to remove that towing company from the rotation list and fine that company.

Class-action suits have been brought against other cities in other states for the same reason, and I see no reason for Decatur to be put in possibly the same position.
