TAFT, Calif. (AP) — A 16-year-old student armed with a shotgun walked into class in a rural California high school on Thursday and shot one student, fired at another but missed, and then was talked into surrendering by a teacher and another staff member, officials said.
The teen victim was in critical but stable condition, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told a news conference. The sheriff said the teacher suffered a minor pellet wound to the head but declined treatment.
When the shots were fired, the teacher began trying to get the more than two dozen students out a back door and also engaged the shooter in conversation to distract him, Youngblood said. A campus supervisor responding to a call of shots fired also began talking to him.
"They talked him into putting the shotgun down," Youngblood said.
The sheriff said that at one point the shooter told the teacher, "I don't want to shoot you" and named the person he wanted to shoot.
The shooter may have had up to 20 shotgun rounds in his pockets, he said.
Officials said there's usually an armed officer on campus but the person wasn't there because he was snowed in. Taft police officers arrived within 60 seconds of first reports.
The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School in a community of fewer than 10,000 people amid oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
As word spread, Dayna Hopper rushed to the school to pick up her son Joseph Sorensen, 16, and daughter, Cheryle Pryor, 15, who had called from Cheryle's cellphone.
"I panicked. I wanted to puke and just get here," Dayna Hopper told The Bakersfield Californian.
KERO-TV Bakersfield reported that the station received phone calls from people inside the school who hid in closets.
The bell had just rung at a nearby school when teachers began shouting for students to get inside buildings, and the principal used an intercom to tell students to stay inside, Felicity Reich, 13, a student at Lincoln Junior High School, told the newspaper.
Shaken, she held the hand of her mother, Ellie Reich, as she spoke.
The student who was shot at the high school was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield, said Ray Pruitt, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff's Department.
About 900 students are enrolled at the high school, which includes 9th through 12th grades.

Lets put him in time out and ground him for a few days. He'll be ok after that. Just some of what's wrong with our children today. I bet he grew up with little or no discipline. These kids need their butts spanked a couple of times and have the fear of God put in their souls at an early age ans this stuff wouldn't be happening. Too many kids running around like they are the sh*t because that is how they are raised. It all goes back home where it starts.
Well said Rebecca! That sums it up!
Oh and by the way this was not an assault weapon just for the record ! now they will try to ban hunting weapons the loonies in command can not seem to realize it is not the weapon causing the problem its the idiot holding it. I have many many weapons and none of them have attacked me. But you can rest assured when they take them away only criminals and loonies will have them.
We have reached the point where we must make a tough decision.
Sure we have a long relationship, but it is clear that there is only one way to avoid this tragedy - we should take immediate steps to outlaw the cause of this event.
Outlaw California now!!!
SINCE THE OBVIOUS IS DIFFICULT FOR SOME, I'LL BEGIN BY SAYING THAT THE FOLLOWING IS MY OPINION.
Too many children today don't receive adequate discipline. So, it is likely that the shooter was one of these children. It is equally likely that the child being targeted was a bully. Contrary to the teachings of Dr. Spock, physical discipline, does not create bullies. A bully is the epitomy of a lack of discipline. They have little self-control and even less self-worth. Therefore, they often do not care if they are suspended or expelled for hurting another student.
Since most children who are bullied DO have self-worth, they refrain from defending themselves out of the fear of being suspended or expelled from school. Years ago, students may have been bullied at school, but were protected from the behavior once they got home. With the popularity of social media sites, the electronic bully can harrass and inflict pain on other studenets 24-7.
Clearly the parents of bullies are failing at curtailing the behavior and schools are coming up short as well. Choosing the zero tolerance method does little (if anything) to protect other students. Since a child who is being bullied cannot defend themselves without fear of being disciplined by the school, their only recourse is to tell a teacher or school administrator about the situation and ask for help. Too often, this results in them being told to ignore the bullying behavior, kill them will kindness and in some instances to "man-up". Because none of this stops the bully's behavior, too many children eventually take matters into their own hands in one of two ways, Either they do what this kid did, or they commit suicide.
Until our society stops believing that nurturing and protecting a child's self-esteem is more important than working to build a child's sense of self-worth, there is no end in sight to these nightmares.
Bravo S! Well worded and oh so true. We have become such a soft society and it has led to this.
worth printing in Decatur AL? with a population of over 300 million lets not act like it is really an epidemic.
