Hartselle claims inaugural title
Austin picks up two wins on baseball diamond

Hartselle won the inaugural Decatur High softball tournament, defeating Ardmore 3-2 in the finals.

In the semifinals, Hartselle whipped Decatur 16-0. Jennifer Lawrence and Mollie Russell each singled for the Lady Red Raiders.

In other Decatur games:

Decatur 7, Scottsboro 0: Meg Whitten threw a four-hitter for the shutout win. Whitney Fletcher was hot at the plate with a two singles and a triple. Liz Pressley and Abi Lott each doubled and Paris Owens and Russell singled in the win.

Decatur 14, Brewer 3: Lott got the win allowing a single and double. She was the difference at the plate, too, with two singles, a walk and two RBIs. Scarlett Wright added a single, a double and two RBIs. Lawrence contributed with two singles and one RBI. Fletcher, Owens, Jelisa Thompson, Whitten, Me'Osha Simpson and Pressley each singled.

Ardmore 3, Decatur 0: Russell had a single and Wright two walks for Decatur (3-2), which will host Lawrence County on Monday at 3:15 p.m.

More softball

Lawrence County 6, Daphne 1: Playing in the Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa tournament, Lawrence County got one single each from Kassie Terry, Whitney Hood and Summer Wilkerson.

Terry and Hood each drove in two runs, and Wilkerson drove in one.

Wilkerson was the winning pitcher.

Hoover 5, Lawrence County 0: Nicole Jackson, Kaylyn Smith and Wilkerson each had one single for the Lady Red Devils (2-3), who will play at Decatur on Monday at 3:15 p.m.

Austin 3, West Morgan 2: Playing in the Hazel Green tournament, Austin sophomore Haley Barnette got the win, striking out seven in five innings.

The Lady Black Bears scored three runs in the fifth to win on Lauren Lindsey's single to right field. Sarah Corn had two RBIs on a single earlier in the inning. Others with singles for Austin were Amy Anderson, Kelsey Jeffreys and Ali Barnette.

West Morgan's Hannah Harris had a single, double and two RBIs for West Morgan.

Austin 6: Clements 1: Kristen Hill struck out seven in four innings for the win. Ali Barnette was the big stick with two singles, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Jeffreys added two singles while Corn, Lindsey, Anderson and Libby Ann Orlinger each singled in the win. Ashton Cowan contributed an RBI.

West Morgan 2, Clements 0: Lauren Seibert got the win, striking out 11 in five innings. She also had a triple, single and two stolen bases.

West Morgan 2, Grissom 1: Rachel Harbin had a single to right field to score Whitlee Potter with the winning run. Ashley Thorn and Potter had singles. Seibert gave up one hit in five innings to earn the victory.

West Morgan 2, Central-Florence 1: Sara Hulvey had an RBI triple and Hayden Hamby and Harris each singled in the win. Seibert picked up her third win of the day. She pitched four innings, struck out two and gave up two hits.

West Morgan (3-1) plays at Austin at 4 p.m. Monday.

Baseball

Austin 13, Albertville 0: Playing at home, the Black Bears recorded the first of its two victories Saturday as winning pitcher Ben Bullard worked five innings, struck out six and allowed two hits and no walks.

At the plate, Bullard was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Ethan Netherton was 2-for-3 with a double. Aaron Richards and Scott Peyton each had a two-run single, and Alex McCay had a two-run double.

Austin 4, Athens 2: In the Black Bears' second win of the day, they trailed 1-0 before scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Zach Thomas delivered with the big blow with a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie.

Russ Sandlin added an RBI single and finished 1-for-3.

Peyton worked six inning to get the pitching win, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out four.

Bullard pitched the seventh and struck out three to close out the win and earn the save.

For Athens, junior Drew Hill had two singles, while Joseph Chambers and Michael Conn each had one single.

Austin (7-2), which has won seven straight, will host Decatur on Friday.

Hazel Green 10, Athens 4: Tyler Dorning's bases-loaded triple gave the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead in the third but Athens couldn't hold it. Hill added a double. William Ming, Colin McMurry and Conn each had singles for Athens, which hosts Brooks 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Decatur 8-12, Priceville 5-5: Warmer weather got the Decatur High bats in gear, but thankfully for the Red Raiders, there was still some Frost on the field Saturday.

In the opener, John Frost had a homer, a double and three RBIs to lead Decatur at the plate.

Tyler Spivey's single to right scored the game's first run in the first, and the Red Raiders never trailed.

Blaine Ingram struck out seven batters in five innings to get the win. William Sartain tossed two innings to earn the save. He also singled twice in the win.

Graham Spencer, John Alexander, Hunter Smith, Will Dennis and Pete Brown each added a single for Decatur.

In game two, Smith, Spencer, Alexander and Noah Iverson each doubled in the four-run first inning for the Red Raiders. Spivey contributed a homer and single. Sartain homered and Dennis had a pair of singles. Smith added another double for Decatur.

Colt Iverson got the win, and Michael Schuster picked up the save, striking out three in 3 1/3 innings.

"I was encouraged with our approaches at the plate," Decatur High coach Steve Netherton said. "Our guys were staying back and driving the ball to the opposite field today. And defensively, we made the routine plays which is so important to winning ball games."

After a week of graduation exams, the Red Raiders (5-2) will play at Austin High on Friday.

Vina 12, Mount Hope 1: Spencer Arthur's double to right scored Cody Stephenson with the Yellow Jackets' lone run to tie the game in the third.

Chase Hopkins and Ryan Inman also singled for Mount Hope in the preseason tournament. Decatur Heritage won the event, and Vina was second.

The Yellow Jackets (0-3) will visit Hazlewood at 5 p.m. Friday.

East Limestone 3, Falkville 1: Nathan Dumont gave up three hits over seven innings to get the win for East Limestone (6-1).

Matthew Bailey went 2-for-3 with a double and a single, and Corey Dunn added a double. Cade Medley, Jared Laxson, Jacob Fowler, and Daniel Tucker each had a single for the Indians.

Trevor Mayer and Joseph Lacey each had a double for Falkville.

East Limestone 21, Butler 0: East Limestone rang up 17 hits with Seth Hughes collecting three.

Medley was 2-for-4 with a home run and double. Dumont, Matt Webster, and Laxson each added an extra base hit and a single.

Tucker also had a pair of singles for the Indians. Matt Webster had a solid day on the mound giving up three hits over five shutout innings for the Indians (7-1) to get the win.

Florence 7, Lawrence County 0: Senior Matthew Pugh had two doubles and Scott Steele added a double for the Red Devils.

Central 9, Lawrence County 4: Central came from behind, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to win.

Steele had a double and two RBIs. Collins Montgomery added an RBI single. Radney Wallace, Pugh and Britt White each singled.

The Red Devils are back in action Monday afternoon at Florence High School.

Soccer

Brewer boys 6, Guntersville 0: Brewer defeated Guntersville in a driving rainstorm Friday night.

Jeremy Talley opened the scoring for the Patriots two minutes into the contest, with an assist from Kohl Sowder.

Then 31 minutes later, the two reversed roles, with Sowder scoring off a Talley assist.

With one minute left in the first half, Josh David scored with an assist from Dylan McCaghren. David opened up the second-half scoring less than a minute from the kickoff, assisted this time by Keith Slater. Thirteen minutes into the half, Talley scored an unassisted goal. Eric Vallejo closed out the scoring 22 minutes into the second half with an assist from Tony Swader.

Goalkeepers Colton Stinson and Chase Baker combined to lead the defense to the shutout. Brewer will play at Cullman on Friday.

Priceville 3, Sheffield 1: Jonathan Savoy had a pair of goals and an assist for Priceville. Dylan Wheeler got a goal and an assist and Ryan Woodson added an assist.

Lorand Dragu was in goal for the Bulldogs.

Priceville 7, Covenant Christian 1: Jonathan Savoy was big Saturday with five goals and an assist for the Bulldogs.

Will Cancilla and Tim Savoy also scored. Will White and Wheeler chalked up an assist each.

Priceville (6-1-0) will host Athens Bible on Thursday.
