Austin baseball sweeps Hazel Green

Austin High’s baseball team swept two games from Hazel Green 5-3 and 2-1.

In the opener, Russ Sandlin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Drew Sanders had a double. Matthew Tittle, Alex McCay and Trey Richard each had a single, and Tittle added an RBI.

Jake Morgan pitched the first five innings, striking out two and allowing three hits. Ben Bullard closed out the final two innings, striking out one.

Corey Jackson led Austin in the second game by going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sandlin was 2-for-4 for Austin (8-3).

Winning pitcher Scott Peyton worked all seven innings and struck out seven. Hazel Green managed only one unearned run against him.

Tanner 7, Elkmont 2: Winning pitcher Chip Greenhaw struck out 15 batters to pace the Rattlers.

At the plate, Brett Pepper went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Shane Dempsey went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Landon Stephens was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

David Adams was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Greenhaw was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jerry Skipworth was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Lawrence County 14, Deshler 10: The Red Devils pounded out 12 hits in their first victory of the day.

Radney Wallace doubled, hit a grand slam and drove in five runs for Lawrence County, while Grant Peebles had a triple and an RBI. Logan Oliver was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Matthew Pugh was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Britt White was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Collins Montgomery drove in two runs with a single. Josh Gaines was 1-for-3 with three runs.

Winning pitcher Jim Hultman worked three innings and struck out two.

Lawrence County 8, Colbert County 0: Wes Holley pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10.

Gaines slugged a two-run homer and scored twice. Pugh was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Holley was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Wallace doubled, and Britt White, Scott White and Oliver each singled. Britt White and Scott White each drove in a run, too.

Athens 20, Lauderdale County 3: Tyler Dorning singled, doubled and slammed two home runs to pace Athens in its first of two victories on the day.

Clay McDonald slugged a grand slam, and Kyle Chronister singled three times. Clay Smith had two singles. Colin McMurry tripled, while Chandler Brock doubled and Joseph Chambers singled.

Winning pitcher Jake Nelson struck out five and gave up two hits.

Athens 13, Sheffield 7: Michael Conn singled four times and got the pitching win after striking out six and allowing five hits.

Kyle Chronister had two singles and a double for Athens (6-4), and Keith Chronister singled twice. Brock singled and doubled once each. Dorning had a double.

Danville 9-6, Priceville 8-3: In the opener, Danville’s Jake Mahathy went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, and Dakota Wilson was 4-for-5 with a double. Roger Smith added a homer.

In the second game, Parker Hogan had two doubles for Danville (11-2), and Cole Veazie was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

East Limestone 5, Buckhorn 3: All eight runs came in the first inning.

After giving up two hits in the first inning, Matthew Bailey gave up only one hit in the last six innings to get the victory for East Limestone (9-1).

Bailey added a three-run home run in the first inning for East Limestone to grab the lead. Dumont led East Limestone at the plate with a home run and two singles, and Jared Laxson added a double and a single. Corey Dunn, Daniel Tucker, Aaron Golden, and Cade Medley each had a single.

Decatur Heritage 14, J.O. Johnson 5: Thomas Vinton singled twice for the Eagles (4-2), and Brent Denson had a single and a triple. William Littlejohn, Matt Law, Ben Teichmiller, Chris Oliver, Nick Mayo and Sam Hurt each had a single.

Winning pitcher David Stephenson worked seven innings and struck out 11.

Softball

Decatur 8, Muscle Shoals 1: Mollie Russell pitched a three-hitter to help Decatur beat Muscle Shoals in a Class 5A, Area 16 softball matchup.

Russell allowed two singles and a double and struck out eight.

At the plate, Jennifer Lawrence slugged a home run, singled once and drove in two runs. Jelisa Thompson added a double, a single and two RBIs.

Meg Whitten tripled, singled and drove in two runs. Abi Lott slugged a solo home run.

Scarlett Wright singled, and Russell accounted for an RBI.

Decatur will play next in the Gulf Shores tournament, which begins Monday.

Sparkman 5, Austin 0: Sarah May had a double for Austin (5-7), while Ali Barnette, Sarah Corn and Ashton Cowan each had a single.

The Lady Black Bears will play again Thursday at home at 4 p.m. against Hazel Green.

Lawrence County 5, Haleyville 0: Summer Wilkerson, Kaylyn Smith and Tiffany Terry combined to pitch a three-hitter and strike out 12 batters.

Wilkerson singled three times, and Ashley Pitt had a double and two RBIs. Smith, Terry and Nicole Jackson each had a single. Lawrence County (4-4) will play at Speake on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

West Morgan 10, Falkville 1: Mikaila Etheredge, Sarah Hulvey and Rachel Harbin each drove in two runs for the Lady Rebels (6-1), while Hayden Hamby and Kimberlee Denard each drove in one.

Etheredge singled twice, while Harbin had a double and a triple. Hamby and Hulvey each had a double.

Lauren Seibert got the pitching win for West Morgan, which will face Lawrence County on Thursday.

East Limestone 21, Columbia 0: The Lady Indians had 13 hits, and Bess Rhodes helped lead the way by going 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and four RBIs. Staci Johnson had a triple, a single and two RBIs.

Cassandra McKinney had a double, a single and two RBIs. Hallie Sandberg had two singles and two RBIs. Jyssica Pepper, McKenzie Crabtree, Danielle Holder and Katherine Looney each contributed a single and an RBI.

Lacee Doucette, Kayla Sneed and Morgan Franks each had an RBI.

Kayla Sneed and Sandberg combined for the pitching win. Sneed pitched the first two innings, striking out five and giving up one hit. Sandberg pitched the third inning, striking out three.

Danville 8, Tanner 7, 8 innings: Senior first baseman Mallory George had two singles, a double, a grand slam and six RBIs for Danville (2-0), which will play at Brewer on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Hannah Little had a double and a single. Sarah Terry doubled and drove in a run, while Kelsey Bell added a double.

Kirby Wallace had a single, while Brittney Atkins singled once.

Regan LaRoche started on the mound and struck out six. Atkins relieved and struck out four to get the pitching win.

Athens Bible 10, Mount Hope 4: Emily Erwin pitched the first three innings and went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Christina Ivey added three RBIs and a single.Allie McCurry, Brooke Chittam and Abbie Melvin each had a single.

Athens Bible 16, Decatur Heritage 3: Melvin pitched a complete game for the win, striking out seven and allowing three hits.

Chittam went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Melvin was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ivey and Katie Eubanks each singled and drove in two runs. Kerri Pender and Chelsea Burgess each scored twice and had a single.

Tennis

Decatur girls 5, Russellville 4: Mary Virginia Sherrill won in singles and doubles to help the Lady Red Raiders improve to 3-0.

Sherrill beat Calli Davis at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Decatur’s Burgoyne Fite beat Millie Fisher 2-6, 6-1, 10-1.

Annie Suggs won for the Lady Raiders at No. 5 singles by defeating Kimberly Fennel 6-1, 6-0. Sarah Fite won at No. 6 singles over Paige Bowman 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Sherrill and Emily Suggs combined to win 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot over Davis and Abby Harbin.

Golf

Lawrence County boys match: Lawrence County Red took a five-team match with a 156, followed by Russellville Black (161), Muscle Shoals (174), Russellville Gold (185) and Lawrence County White (201).

Jakob Oliver led Lawrence County Red with a 36. Elijah Frost had a 39, while Kyle West added a 40, and Payden King shot a 41. Blake Maltbie shot a 49 to pace Lawrence County White.

Decatur 158, Bob Jones 160, Austin 177: Playing at Sunset Landing in Madison, Andrew Lowry paced Decatur with a 38, while Stuart Morehead, Bill Nabors and Braxton Rainey each added a 40.

For Austin, Madison Terry shot a 45. Zach Gourgeot and Jeremy Payne each shot a 45, while Kevin Hines shot a 49.
