Camp debuts with no-hitter for Austin
Austin High’s baseball team got a pair of 5-0 victories Thursday, sweeping Priceville with identical scores in the doubleheader by way of dominant performances on the mound from junior Trey Richard and freshman Justin Camp. “They both did a great job on the mound. They took control of the game,” Austin head coach Jake Miles said. “I can’t say enough about all of our starting pitching here lately. They’ve really risen to the challenge.” Richard pitched the first win, striking out six, walking two and allowing three hits in the complete seven innings. Camp took the mound in his first varsity debut and delivered a no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four in the second game. “You would’ve never known anything was going on,” Miles said. “He handled himself very well. He looked like a veteran.” Russ Sandlin went 2-for-4 for Austin (10-3). Eli Allen and Kyle Bunnell had multiple singles for Priceville. West Morgan 7, Lawrence County 5: West Morgan’s Matthew Poole blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved to be the difference in the final score. Colton Cartee’s three-run homer for the Rebels in the second starting things off. Seth Wallace also contributed a single and an RBI. For Lawrence County, Josh Gaines had a two-run homer and a single. Scott Steele added a solo homer and single. Athens 12, Rogers 2: Keeton Griggs struck out four in six innings to get the win for the Golden Eagles. William Ming and Collin McMurry each had two doubles and a single in the victory. Kyle Chronister added two singles and a double. Clay McDonald, Joseph Chambers and Todd Pepper each contributed a single. West Limestone 7, East Limestone 6: Ryan Wheeler scored the go ahead run in the sixth inning for the Wildcats win. Wheeler led all hitters at the plate with a double and two singles, and also got the decision on the mound in relief. Also for West Limestone, Colton Hill had a pair of singles, Blake Moffett had a triple, and Zac Shindorf added a double. Nathan Dumont drove in three runs with a triple and a double for the Indians (9-2). Boys soccer Decatur 4, Sparkman 0: The second-ranked Class 5A Red Raiders continue to roll as they shut out Sparkman on Thursday afternoon. Senior Tom Gray and Raul Alanis made it look easy. Alanis took a pass from Gray for the game’s only score in the first half. In the second half, Alanis scored again, this time unassisted. Gray followed with two goals of his own. Clay Strickland assisted on Gray’s first of the game. “I’m very happy with the way the guys are playing thus far,” Decatur coach Brian Quarles said. “I hope we can bring it back even stronger after the break.” Decatur (10-1-0) hosts Arab at 4:30 p.m. Friday before going on spring break. Decatur defeated Arab earlier in the season 3-0. Austin 3, Huntsville 2: Jake Mendenhall, William Manuel and Joseph Salgado each scored a goal for the winning Black Bears. Greg Thomas was on goal for Austin (4-1-1) in the win. Priceville 2, St. Bernard 1: After ending regulation in a tie with the lone goal scored by Will Cancilla, Priceville got its winning goal from Jonathan Savoy in the second overtime. Bob Hall got the assist. Lorand Dragu played in goal for Priceville. The Bulldogs, now 4-0 in Section 5, 1A-4A, will face West Morgan on March 25 at home. Girls soccer Decatur 2, Guntersville 2: Sarah Beth Henderson scored for Decatur (6-3-4), who trailed 2-0 before rallying for the tie. With five minutes remaining in the game Sally Adams headed in the final goal of the contest. Priceville 5, St. Bernard 0: Rachel Fredricks scored two goals and Jordan Crow, Stephanie Varner and Elizabeth Wheeler each had one for the Priceville (3-3-1, 2-0). Masey Smith was in goal for the shutout. Priceville will host West Morgan on March 25. Softball Hazel Green 4, Austin 2: Two walks and three errors in the sixth inning proved costly to the Lady Black Bears as the Trojans scored three times to take the victory. Austin took a 1-0 in the second on a groundout RBI by freshman Ashton Cowan. In the third, Austin upped the score to 2-0 when Sarah Corn laced a double into left field for a RBI. With a pair of singles and run scored, Tara May was the big stick for Austin. Ali Barnette had a double for Austin. Lauren Lindsey, Melissa Thompson and Kelsey Jeffreys each singled. Austin (5-8) will play three games Monday and two games Tuesday in pool play of the Nike Gulf Shores Classic. Elimination play begins Wednesday. Hatton 14, Mount Hope 4: Hatton freshman Jessica Speake was busy for the Lady Hornets. She struck out four to get the mound decision, and at the plate, she hit a double and two singles, good for one RBI in the win. Junior Kristen Talcott carried the biggest stick for Hatton with a triple, double, two singles and four RBIs. Fellow junior Brooke Brown had a pair of singles, a double and two RBIs. Tamra Terry, also a junior, had three singles and one RBI. Brandi Reed slapped two singles and knocked in a run. Scarlett Stephenson had a single, double and one RBI. Morgan Peebles contributed a single. Hatton (2-1) will host the Hatton Invitational on Saturday. Speake, Danville, Addison, Convenant Christian, Lexington and Loretto, Tenn., also will be competing there. Danville 11, Vinemont 1: Senior Brittany Atkins struck out 10 in six innings for the win. Brianna Callahan hit a triple for Danville (3-1), while Nicole Linderman, Michelle Smith, Mallory George, Kelsey Bell and Kirby Wallace each singled. Lawrence County 2, West Morgan 0: The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Whitney Hood and Kaylyn Smith each had a single and an RBI, while Nicole Jackson hit a double and a single. Also for Lawrence County (6-4), Kassie Terry had a single. Smith also pitched the win for the Lady Red Devils, striking out seven and walking one in five innings before being relived by Summer Wilkerson. R.A. Hubbard 18, Hazlewood 17: Chasity Puryear pitched the Lady Chiefs to the rivalry win, striking out six and walking three in the complete seven innings. Puryear also chipped in an in-park home run for the final lead in the top of the fourth inning. Mikki Byrd and Candace Orr each scored three runs for R.A. Hubbard. Bernisha Harris, Candace King and Kierra Shuford each went 3-for-4. East Limestone 1, Athens Bible 0: Morgan Franks had a double and two singles and scored the winning run for East Limestone. Jyssica Pepper had the winning hit in the bottom of the seventh. Hallie Sandberg and Franks combined on the shutout. East Limestone and Athens Bible will be traveling to Gulf Shores to participate in the Nike Gulf Coast Tournament next week. Golf Priceville wins tri-match: Priceville’s boys totaled 171 to beat West Point (181) and Brewer (196) on Thursday at Quail Creek Golf Course in Hartselle. Brett Wilson and Micah Rigoni each shot 41 to lead the Bulldogs, while Nic Akin chipped in a 42. Cody Langford and Houston Langford each shot 47 for Brewer. Tennis Cullman boys 8, Decatur 1: Decatur’s Charlie Rose posted a win at No. 3 singles, defeating Spitzer Boozer 6-4, 6-2. Decatur girls 5, Cullman 4: The Lady Red Raiders remained undefeated with wins by Mary Virginia Sherrill, Emily Suggs, and Sarah Sherrill in singles. Emily Suggs and Mary Virginia Sherrill combined for a win at the No. 1 doubles position, while another Suggs/Sherrill combination won at No. 2 doubles (Annie Suggs and Sarah Sherrill).
