MONTGOMERY — Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange promised to challenge in court two gun control bills that were approved by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee if they become law.
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to approve a ban on semiautomatic weapons and ammunition magazines that carry more than 10 rounds. The bill names more than 150 weapons that would be banned.
Earlier this week the same committee passed a universal background check bill. Strange said Senate Democrats are using tragedies such as the shooting at a Connecticut elementary school to advance a political agenda.
The Republican attorney general said Friday if the bills become law, he will move quickly to challenge them in court. Strange called the bills abusive federal overreach.

Of course he will-he has to pander to his constituents. Guns and gambling-so glad our elected officials focus on the important issues of this state.
My 2nd Constitutional right is pretty important to me. So is protecting my family. I guess you are the type that would rather wait on a 911 call and tell the murderer/rapist/burglar to just wait for the police to arrive before they commit any crimes.
No, I am the type that believes in COMMON SENSE gun laws-and don't forget those "other" 2 words in the 2nd Amendment-WELL REGULATED.
The phrase "well-regulated" was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people's arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it.
