Arrest made in shooting at gas station

Demetrius Jaques Smith

A man involved in a high noon shoot-out today at Speed Z gas station on West Moulton Street returned after police arrived on scene and tried to pass himself off as a bystander, Decatur police said.

Demetrius Jaques Smith, 24, of 219 Sixth Ave. N.W., faces charges of discharging a firearm in the city limits and reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors. He was being held in Decatur City Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.

Detective Mike Burleson said Smith and another man exchanged several shots in the gas station parking lot.

No one was injured, but several other people, including two juveniles, were in the area at the time, Burleson said.

One of the bullets struck a storage building at Speed Z, police said.

A bullet hole found in the door of the nearby Church’s Chicken restaurant may have been from an earlier incident.

“That had been there for several months,” Church’s owner Murphy Brown said. “If somebody shot a bullet over there it would be very impressive if it went through the exact same spot.”

Police are looking for the other man believed to have been involved, Burleson said.

Please tell not in DECATUR!!!!!!

This use to be a quite little town

yeah it was 15 or 20 years ago , before all this generation of entitlement folk started roaming the streets day and night , I,m sure there was some drugs involved one way or another also. its a wonder it was not around the corner from me or in my backyard , pretty regular event since they moved all that trash in to the apartments of the decatur housing authority and section 8 rentals all over the place over here when they tore down stonegate. that was one stupid mistake , at least they knew where to go to look for the trouble makers when they were there. Now they are spread all over town. Yes virginia decatur is like little chicago Obamie would be so proud. And he wants to take my guns bahahahahaha

willing to bet they did not have ccw permits and the guns involved were stolen who wants the bet ????

This is the same place where the old "Stone Gate" was at. And just recently there was an article that the city says they have waited until it's no longer stigmatized..... And the bullet hole at Churchs Chicken was from an earlier incident!

SAME $HIT DIFFERENT DAY

oh yes

Tbone, please don't use the word "entitlement folk" when describing these thugs. Too many people make the mistake of using entitlement and welfare programs as being the same thing, but they are not. Entitlement means that you have invested or paid into, thus you have an entitled right to the benefits (Medicare and Social Security.) Welfare is a program in which you do not have to invest or pay in to receive the benefits (food stamps and Aid to Families with Dependent Children). Nothing wrong with welfare as people go through hard times and need the help, but that help should only be temporary, not a lifelong income that is supplemented with under the table or illegal activities. I would agree that there are also many people running around with a false sense of entitlement these days.

T-bone, it might be a good thing for the Obama law to take your gun cause some of the things you post on here makes it seem like you are very unstable and mentally challenge..

I so agree with you Patricia. I thought I was the only one thinking this "man" is crazy! Feels good to know I wasn't wrong about him. I get so tired of him writing about "Obamie" every damn time a black person is involved in something. I have read many articles in the DD that includes theft, drugs, guns, etc...but the person arrested is a white person, and guess what? NOT ONE SINGLE COMMENT!!!!!! Where were you then TBONE???????????????????????? Cause you always got something to say, why not then?????????????????????????????

Every working person contributes in tax money to the welfare budget. These are the type of people you go into their homes andconfiscate every firearm they have in it. people like Smith has no value for human life except if it pertains to them. Handling a gun in public should carry at least a 3 year sentence in jail not just a misdeamenor. And armed robbery should carry a 10 year sentence if caught with a gun.

Fry their asses in the elctric chair . . . they are thugs!
