By Seth Burkett

For victims of crime and their families, the thought of the alleged offender walking free on bail after shelling out a couple of thousand dollars to a bondsman is troubling. However, … More »

Actually what is wrong would be 1. punishment too light. 2. food too good. 3. Life in prison too good. 4. sentences too light. 5. conviction too hard. 5. Too many loop holes for defense attorney's. Lastly victims have fewer rights than criminals.

Steve, longer sentences mean more prisons. More prisons mean higher taxes. You ready to increase taxes? The rules of society are not as simple as some think. This idea that jails and prisons are no more than Holiday Inn Express is not true. I have worked with hundreds of people who have been incarcerated in not only Alabama but literally all over the world. The conditions of Alabama prisons, like most other catagories in this state is 48th or 49th, better only than Mississippi. Even if harsher conditions and penalities worked, which they don't, it costs money which most taxpayer are not willing to pay.

As for bail it is not meant as punishment since an accused is, as the Founding Fathers intended, presumed to be innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law. This is as it should be. This constitutional guarentee works for you as well as for every American. contrary to what some law and order proponents advocate everyone arrested is not guilty, either by the letter of the law or morally. How does this guarentee work for law abiding citizens? This way:you may niavely guarentee you will never violate the law, but you cannot guarewntee you will never be accused of violating the law.

The WHOLE problem is that the legal system seems to be set up to protect criminals. That's fine, I guess. To a point. But WHO PROTECTS US??? This idea of "innocent until proven guilty" is great on paper, but carrying it to the extreme only protects criminals. They can be seen LAUGHING in their booking photos. How about this: NO BAIL BONDSMEN!!! They make the bail system ineffective by allowing a criminal to get of of jail for 10% of the bail amount. And if the legal system really wants to protect us, the TRULY innocent, like they claim at ellection time, they need to fix it so that if a person commits another crime: NO BAIL AGAIN AS LONG AS THEY LIVE!!! And don't allow lawyers to EVER lie in court or out. Period!!! If they know their client is guilty, but state that he is not, they are committing perjury. You lawyers find a way to keep from releasing criminals back into society. Right now, you seem to be intent on doing just that!

We live in a libertine society, at the same time ignoring the mental health implications. If you would like to better understand our society's delimma you should read Joseph Campbell's "Myths To Live By". Recent killings, in Conn. and NY, were by individuals who became paranoid schizophrenics, one through years in prison and one the video game world, both Waste Land situations. Mental health treatment, with modern drugs, could make a big difference, well worth the cost.

Yea and I notice the other day the 12 young people that had meth charges against them in hartselle was 1 million each????at least that what the paper said

This past week, 12 were arrested for a one pot meth lab, that was the worst charge, bail was set one million. Two weeks ago, 2 people were arrested for 15 meth labs, and 3 generators, plus they were already out on more than one bail each,

plus one was on probation, bond was set at $83,000 !! I would like to hear the Judges excuses for this obvious problem

with the system..

How about this lady & gentlemen, how bout I go and swear falsly to a judge that all of you are manifacturing meth at your houses and get a warrant for your arrests. You are put in jail. Irequest million dollar bail bonds. how many of you can make bail. None of you are guilty but you stay in jail for at least a year waiting for help. Don't look to lawyers, as one of you accused them of being liers and you want nothing to do with them. You have to make your own bond! That's probable impossible because all of you together along with your gross wages wouldn't amount to half a million. Remember now you are not guilty. Should you stay a year for the crime you did not commit? When you continue to call the accused criminals you are callin g yourselves the same. You always think of yourselves as "law abiing" but even if you are, you are not immune to the possibility that the government will abuse you!

Is our system screwed up? Hell yes. Look at Amy Bishop Anderson who confessed to 3 burders with a dozen of witnesses who saw it, but yet she has to go to trial and taxpayers has to pay for specialists to testify and also pay for the defgense attourned. why don't they just take her ass and sit her in ole yellow and throw the switch.? Low bail on some crimes, give the accused time to go out and threatne the witnesses that has to testify against them. And what about the 3 strikes and you're out. Some states on the 3 conviction throw their rear ends in jail for a long long time some even life sentence. Jusges are way to wasy for them. Get some of the judges from out countries that execute drug dealers instead of putting them in jail. If you got some innocent people, let God sort them out.

To all Concerned: Our Legal system is just that a "SYSTEM" a Money making system. You and I are just going to have to pay for everyone to bilk us dry.

Orrville, Amy Bishop is doing life without parole. Is that not enough? The reason that all the money was spent by the state for her defense was that the DA was trying to seek the death penalty. Do you know that the families of the victims did not want her to receive the DP? Maybe before prosecutors leap to seeking the DP, they should really have a heart to heart talk with the family.

Joe from Falkville-they wont do anything unless they have proof of making meth or any other illegal activity, like any other accusation, you must have concrete proof or nothing will be done. ive known for a fact a girl who was doin it around her 20 month old, called police, dhr etc, police might go to the door & if they dont see or smell it from the door then they leave dhr wont get involved unless a child has marks on them, all of everything too late. in another incident the police might just help themselves in your house instead of asking. the entire system is based on who you know, how much cash to pay them or in the girl aboves case,,,,sleep with your lawyer

If sleeping with your lawyer pays him, that STUFF must be pretty darn good! Never seen any I wanted more than my salary! All I can say is GIRL GOT THAT GOLD STUFF !!!!!

Danita, you are so niave.
