Playing an instrument takes a lot of talent, thought and smarts. To be able to take that instrument play music and march is something else. Many bands today the band member must memorize many pieces of music which at times can be challenging.
Not downing sports it is said sports teaches charcter, well so does being a musician. Many band members play more than one instrument are usually at the top of homor rolls or are close to it. My band director in school watched our report cards so that we maintained high grades. He helped find us help if need be. I even got a two year music scholarship and a four year scholarship but I did not want to teach music as much as I loved playing it.
You want to see discpline go watch a band practice or sit in on a session watch discpline in action.
It is very expensive to be in a high schol band, but the rewards are well worth it. I have always supported the band. If any of you get a chance, buy some candy, fruit, pizza coupns, hams, turkerys, etc. Nothing like watching a kid smile when ya help em.
It would be great if local school boards contributed funds to the basic of the band programs. Maybe pay for music and instruments? Travel? Uniforms? anything?
