Their there because they are to scared to go over and do their job in other parts of the city. Give me a break 6 police cars in one spot.
"Cindy from Trinity", If your sorry a$$ was out there working on the side of the road with inconsiderate drivers whizzing by just feet away, you'd appreciate the efforts of the traffic officers trying to protect it!!! Sounds like you "were" one of those inconsiderate drivers!!!
"They're there"
Six cars? That's a speed trap.
And yes, it leaves much of the rest of the city unprotected.
Those road workers sure arent going to get any tickets for moving to fast...I mean come on,,, just how long can you drag this job out
Who ever has the bid for the second part of the beltine. WHEN WILL YOU EVER FINISHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Come on DD, find out whyyyyyyyyyyy.
Obey the law and there is no issue.
DPD is using the road work as an excuse to write tickets. You don't have to be speeding to get one! Since they are able to view whether or not you have insurance via their car computer, they have been on Beltline ever since getting behind cars running their tags and then making up some false reason and pulling them over. DPD and over half it's officers are poor excuses for protection. But they can write a ticket!!!! And before you say it....NOPE, I WILL NOT BE THE FIRST TO CALL THEM! MY FRONT DOOR IS LOCKED AT NIGHT FOR AN INTRUDER'S PROTECTION, NOT MINE!!!!! Only reason I would call would be if I were involved in a wreck.....and hell half the time the penmanship is so bad, looks like a 3 yr. old wrote it.
Some of you people would complain if they hung you with a brand new rope. Obey the law and you don't have to care if they have 20 police cars there. I'm sue if you were stopped and had proper paperwork on your car, they would let you go with an apology. What they should do is raise the fines for running red lights up to $ 500.00. I don't understand why people have to go like hell to beat the red light and htne have to blow youjr horn to get them moving when a light turns green. They are busy on the phone., right?
I got hit in the parking lot of Hobby Lobby a few months ago by some idiot who was looking at his phone instead of watching where he was going. I called the police and an officer showed up about 5 minutes later. He was very professional and nice. My daughter was in the car with me at the time of the accident. This officer stayed with us until my husband could get there, which was almost an hour after he finished writing up the report. I didn't ask him to stay, he said he would be staying until my husband could get there. It was after dark by the time my husband arrived, and then we had to wait another 45 minutes on the tow truck (yes, the idiot hit me THAT hard). As soon as the officer left, we were approached by various people wanting money and everything else from us. I was very thankful that the officer stayed with us as long as he did. In many cities, the police will no longer do a police report if the accident occurs on private property.
Some of you might think that the DPD sits around and eats doughnuts and writes tickets all day long. I say if you think you can do a better job, then go attend the police academy and put your money where your mouth is.
Good post Rebecca.
Thank you for correcting Ben......that's one of my pet peaves.
My only issue is this if they want to enforce the speed limits there simply turn those lights on then everyone will see them signs or no signs. Because when I see lights I slow down, I check and see was I speeding. If the police are there and they really want to enforce just turn the lights on, But if you want to collect revenues then lay there with no lights and run radar. Action speaks for it's self.
If they want to write some tickets, how about at Danville Road and the Beltline. Every morning, I witness several vehicles running red lights. Simply slow down and there is not a problem.
Legal Theives. Bigger crime issues in Decatur than speeding. How about using police resources to reduce Meth making drug usage and reducing robbery.
Article in this mornings paper, "Beltline ticket trap". Yes and it should be. Construction going on, BIG speed limit signs, people working 10 ft from you as you pass. No excuses, slow down or go another way you ignorant people.
Ken, I agree people should obey the posted speed limits, but these jobs are dragging on way too long.
There has not been any activity on the North end of the Beltline in a long time, but the job doesn't get finished.
That is where the frustration comes from.
If you can't take the frustration people have at the construction companies dragging this out, maybe you should find another line of work. No one makes you stand ft from passing traffic.
My granddaughter's Dad was struck and killed while standing on side of the road after emptying a trash can.
The garbage truck was visible to the driver - which meant she should have taken precaution.
I don't need a sign to tell me when to slow down. I certainly would rather pay a ticket than hit and kill someone. Put yourself in those worker's shoes. They cannot do their job and also watch for cars.
First, the DPD shouldn't have to sit with their lights on, just to make people slow down. The speed limit is posted for a reason. If drivers don't know that the speed limit is reduced in a construction zone, then they have no business driving. This is a standard policy and has been around for years. Just obey the law and you have nothing to worry about.
Second, I appreciate the fact that ANY police department is checking insured drivers. For those complaining, sounds like maybe you have no insurance. Have you ever been in an accident with an uninsured driver? I have and it is a pain to deal with. That's another law. As long as you obey it, you have nothing to worry about.
Last, before you complain about how long it is taking to finish the North end of the Beltline, know the facts. Dealing with the railroad company can be tedious. They have the say over when work can be performed on their right of way. That's what is taking so long to finish that section of roadway.
Nothing but glorified tax collectors... that's all this is about. NOT safety... NOT construction. It's the best excuse the 'storm troopers' have to simply collect money so stop making excuses for them. "Protect and Serve"??? Right... how about "Harass and Oppess".
Look at the know it all complainers about DPD doing their job! Herman hates DPD, quite evident but avoids coming right out and saying it. DD it is not a trap, look up what trap is, others it is not a speed trap, look that up also. DPD has a patrol and a traffic division. The traffic division are the one's you are seeing there. 6 cars, a bit much, that I will agree on. However, for all you complainers, it is marked with signs, do the speed limit and you will have nothing to complain about. Sit there with their lights on?? Stop it! Please!
what's "Oppess"? Anyway, FYI somebody close to this 'trap' (that should know) project told me that they're talking about having unmarked police cars on this assignment, didn't mention when that would start so they may already be out there. Just don't speed - today's technology makes it very easy to prove your actual location & speed. Then again Wednesday night I traveled from Lowe's to Kroger in the left lane and didn't notice one single reduced speed sign! I hope they're installing signs on the inside lanes also. Think I'll try to only CROSS the Beltline if at all possible, especially when workers are there, because I know this is going to get crazy soon!
if you can't slow down to a safe speed around the construction workers, please use some road other than the Beltline. Those workers have family and friends who care about them and don't want to see them injured or killed. The workers have no say in how long the job lasts or what days they are out there working so please don't take your anger out on them. It is annoying to all of us to have to go 25-35 mph but it will be worth the headache in the long run.
Speed limits are there for a reason, construction or not. If you can't obey, prepare to pay. Thank YOU to the DPD and all they do. These men and women put their lives on the line every time they go on duty. They should be commended for their service and work. Many of them put in hours outside the job giving back to the community through volunteerism for the Special Olympics and many other causes. They are an outstanding group of professionals. Yes, there is an occasional "bad cop" in any police department, but those are the exception and not the rule. I completed the Citizens Police Academy several years ago and got to know many of the police officers and have been on a ride along. They are a classy group of men and women. They work hard and they do an outstanding job.
@ THOR....if I hated DPD I would say so.....I don't hide how I feel....and I have insurance, thank you! They can get behind any of the 6 vehicles that I have.
What amazes me is that the DD ran an article for 3 days straiught telling foks about this . . . AND THEY STILL GOT CAUGHT. All I can say is LOL LOL LOL!!!
@ Fed Up and Thor The reason I said have lights on was untill they get the signs out, They have said the signs are not all out reread the story.
I read the story Casino, they said they were not enforcing where it was not properly posted, or did you miss that?
Yea right Herman, you always have negative things to say about DPD in your posts.
Joseph, you got some bad information, DPD does not use unmarked cars with it's traffic enforcement, there are too many old unmarked retired police cars around. Don't believe me, call and ask the Chief. Second, with so many violating the multiple speed limit signs posted, they don't have to if they had the means to do it.
@ Thor....I sure do cause I haven't lost anything at DPD.......half are worthless! You got some good ones, but those bad ones makes it worse for the good ones. I avoid the Beltline all the time, not just because they started working on them.
So Herman, I appreciate honesty, you are now honest in my book. Half are worthless huh? But the bad ones make it worse for the good ones..Yes the bad ones do...I agree..but it is not half, not even close...you don't think your negative remarks about the PD makes it a little worse too?
No, I speak from experience from people I know, even officers I know! The truth is the truth! Look up the article about Archer....look up the article of Officer White! I know several officers down @ Decatur City, I know what their attitudes are, I've heard the words come out of their mouths. And if the general public heard these kinds of things, they would be disgusted w/ them as well.
@fed up. Consider that the majority of working poor can barely afford to put gas in our cars to get to our minimum wage job, do you think that uninsured drivers enjoy having to taking their kids to school, going to class or work while worrying about being pulled over? For those of us who can't afford basic medical care or decent housing, much less car insurance- getting our vehicles towed with a $500 fine and being unable to get our cars out of impound until purchasing insurance we already can't afford means losing those vehicles. I'm sorry if the existence of poverty annoys you, I know it must be a real hassle to deal with. Don't get me wrong, I know it sucks getting into an accident with uninsured drivers, I understand. But if you're blessed enough to afford insurance, please stop and put yourself in our shoes. A major portion of Alabama's population lives at or below poverty and this only makes it harder. Give us all the tickets you want, impound our cars, and legislate us off the roads but don't think for one second that we have an easy choice. Pay the light bill, pay rent, put food on the table, or pay for insurance. Those are real choices you're lucky you aren't facing. Alot of us aren't looking for handouts from the government, we work hard and every day is a struggle. Just try to have some compassion or at least empathy. these are hard times my friend, and someday you just might find yourself on the other side- no money, no insurance, no reliable public transportation, and no choice.
If you are in an accident with a car that has no insurance, and it goes to court, the driver is fined about 50,00 and you end up fixing your own car. If you have insurance and have deductable, then the only cost to you is the deductable. If you have no insurance, you pay the full amount of repairs. That could mean losing your car altogether. How does that sound?
A lot of complaints comves from drivers stopped for speeding even when it was posted at 45 mph. I seen many driver turning left off Wimderly dRive onto Spring ave. and some do it all the time. I seen vehicles passing on the left turn middle lane on Modaus rd. I had a drive turn left in front of me and he was it the straight or right turn only lane. And yes, on Danville and Beltling, they don't know when to quit turning left when the light turns red for them. Always one of two more cars to wait at the next light.
It sounds awful Orville, but I believe you missed the point. I'm not saying it is a good thing that people drive around without insurance, I'm not saying it doesn't screw over the person who gets hit, and I'm not saying it's an ideal situation. I'm saying that it is a reality for alot of people living in poverty and that most of them don't have a choice. I also know there are plenty of people out there who can afford it but waste their money on luxury items, but they are the minority, not the majority of uninsured drivers. I'm not sure how you fail to see that.
At a recent meeting there was a discussion about city revenue and i think it was Charles Kirby said maybe the police could write more tickets.
literal highway robbery.
Don't speed, no ticket. How hard is that?
Kenneth, What I said is no matter how hard it is, can you not have a car to transport your kids to school?
I do have sympathy for those that work hard, but make very little pay. Please don't put words into my mouth. I work for an agency that pays MANY, MANY of its hard working people, at or below poverty level. I am very good friends with a lot of those. But, I also have my kids on the road. My family is on the road. We are all insured. Are we lucky? Maybe, or maybe we have just worked for what we earn. Regardless, I think the insurance law is a good thing. I like the fact that if I am involved in an accident, maybe the other person will be insured. Hopefully, more of them since the law passed. Are times tough? Yes, but that doesn't change the law. I know entirely too many people, living at or below national poverty level, who have cell phones, internet, cable tv, etc. Most people would say they HAVE to have those things, but no...they do not! Those are 3 of the main things I see people with the most and they are all unnecessary.
