Hartselle fire fighters, Captain John Norwood and firefighter Cory Johnson visited Bethel Baptist School’s Kindergarten classes Friday, Oct. 12 as part of the student’s study on fire safety and prevention. The firefighters put on their full gear so the children could see what a firefighter might look like if they were in a house fire. They offered the children simple tips for safety during a house fire.
• First, get down and below the smoke.
• Find a way out of the house. It is good to create a family plan with at least two ways out and practice the route often.
• Never hide from firefighters or in a house with a fire. Always try to find a way out or locate a fire fighter by yelling or making noise.
• Install a smoke alarm and test it often. It only takes about six minutes for a fire to get out of hand, sometime sooner.
