Charity is not enough

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County transforms children.

It also plays a part in tackling one of the greatest obstacles to state progress, generational poverty.

Its mission, matching adult volunteers to children who need their influence, is without controversy. No caring Alabamian would deprive children of the mentoring the program provides, generally to those in low-income homes or broken families. Even a judgmental political climate that increasingly blames the poor for their struggles does not go so far as to blame the children of the poor.

Nor do rational Alabamians doubt the devastating effects of generational poverty. Even those who haughtily attribute poverty to cultural deficiencies recognize the need to break the cycle. Those in poverty cost everyone else money, through Medicaid expenses and food stamps and other safety-net programs. Even people devoid of compassion recognize that pulling children out of poverty benefits a state with one of the highest poverty rates in the nation.

Despite a mission that almost all Alabamians applaud, Big Brothers Big Sisters lost its state funding in 2011, devastating its work in Morgan, Lawrence, Cullman and Winston counties. It was one of many cuts made by the state in an effort to keep its property taxes the lowest in the nation and its overall taxes the second lowest in the nation.

Some would argue that’s as it should be. Why should Alabama residents have to pay taxes to support a program they may or may not support? That’s the job of private charities.

The short answer is that private charities cannot take up the slack. A combination of less-generous donations and increasing need have left organizations like Big Brothers woefully short of the resources they need to perform a task that benefits not only children but the state.

This is not a new problem. Even with state and federal tax dollars funding Medicaid, the poor struggle to find doctors who will provide care at low reimbursement levels.

The poor line up at local food banks, but many struggle with hunger. Drops in federal funding of Pell grants have not triggered an increase in privately funded scholarships.

The claim that charitable giving will rise to meet the needs of the disadvantaged may have been true a generation ago, but today it is a myth.

Those who work at organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County see the desperate need of their clients. They work crazy hours at minimal pay, donating much of their time. They beg for contributions to help the many children who, without intervention, are doomed to the poverty that overwhelms their parents.

Alabama need not be a compassionate state to conclude it should provide its impoverished children with a ladder out of generational poverty. If our state is to enjoy a future marked by progress rather than poverty, it needs to give its children a chance.

Sadly, there is nothing new in this editorial save for fresh and petulant insult of the Decatur Daily's remaining readership. The poor have always been been with us and will always remain, such is human nature. Revered intellectual, and leading Democrat senator, Patrick Moynihan, architect of modern welfare, famously boasted in the nineteen sixties that poverty would be eliminated in ten years before publicly lamenting its failure just ahead of his death some three decades later, concluding too late that morality cannot be legislated. The story of humankind is, in the main, the story of poverty, escape from which occurs rarely, and then, only briefly. Again today, the Decatur Daily directs blame toward inadequate funding and racial and economic bigotry, and, away from the root cause, lest the public begins to question the mortifying social agenda and the Democrat Party ideology suffers diminution.

It took years to undo the tax code that underpinned American society, to dismantle the charitable network that existed prior to congressional enactment of, "The Great Society," in the nineteen sixties, to destroy the institution of marriage, and to create a new underclass of single mother households bereft of values and wholly consumed with angry, threatening demand for taxpayer dollars. As has been noted, where once the African-American community, for instance, enjoyed the highest rate of American marriage, fathers are now mere family appendages, with more than a few grasping their own appendages, unable to distinguish sexual prowess from human achievement, such is the corruptive effect of taxpayer largesse doled out in errant fashion. Currently, welfare inducement and provision exacerbates the plight of the needy and perpetuates their misery. If, however, taxpayer kindness was contingent upon marriage, the institution of fatherhood would be restored overnight with single mothers scrambling to find suitors, and returning to indigent males a missing sense of self-esteem, the immediate effect of which, on children, particularly boys, would be profound. Consequently, responsible behavior must precede, rather than follow, the distribution of government welfare if the poor are to gain any true measure of relief, otherwise, additional private donation would be premature, not, as the Decatur Daily rancidly accuses.......... "haughty."

Thank GOD ALMIGHTY otis doesn't run the country!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your hubris rants reminds me of a case of REAL BAD DIARRHEA.

Talking about haughty, LOOKED IN THE MIRROW LATLEY???????

One day you & that group of putz that you praise so much will get your just reward!!!!!!!!!!

Those who have yet to observe personally the aforementioned valueless, angry demand for taxpayer money in print may view the above comment from SANDRA, an excellent example concluding with added vengeful malice.

Mr. Otis, please take your medication before you write your rambling remarks.

One wonders whether it was a string of tragedies or a sudden onslaught of organic brain disorder which made Otis the tragic character he is today. What a lonely man he must be.

It was his perceived observation of all the valueless, angry demands for taxpayer's money is what made him what he is.

Also to otis there is no vengeful malice in my comment, by reading some of your diarrhea rants lead me to conclude that you would kick a dog in the head when it's down. Just like that group of putz you praise so much does.

And for that there will be JUDGEMENT.

Sandra, when was the last time you saw your reflection in the mirrow?

Mine is more about care & compassion than yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( BET )

otis ( notice little O) I'll have to refer you back to Joe from Falkville's post. I was raised in Alabama the state of hate ,And that is the reason the group of putz got voted in Alabama, But my parents seen to that I wasn't brainwashed like you seem to be by that group of putz you praise so much.

Also the only fresh and petulant insult I read in this is from you.

The greed by the 1% is the reason we have the poor and people needing help, this is do to the trickle down effect. LOL / LMFAO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know about others but my trickle down amounted to a bucket of sand. The sand bucket was more valuable.

otis why don't you go praise that group of putz you praise so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To OTIS PLEASE READ:

Alabama need not be a compassionate state to conclude it should provide its impoverished children with a ladder out of generational poverty. If our state is to enjoy a future marked by progress rather than poverty, it needs to give its children of ALL COLORS a chance!

"If, however, taxpayer kindness was contingent upon marriage, the institution of fatherhood would be restored overnight with single mothers scrambling to find suitors, and returning to indigent males a missing sense of self-esteem, the immediate effect of which, on children, particularly boys, would be profound." WHAT????? This could not only be futher from the truth, but has to be your single most prejudicial group of statements yet. For those who prefer not to indulge in post-graduate level reading, here are his statements put plainly -

Single mothers have stripped their chldren's fathers self-worth by not allowing them to function in a traditional role. If welfare was made available only to those who were married, single mothers would quickly wed their children's fathers. Once their parents were married, the lives of these children - especially boys would be made whole.

If I had any doubt about Otis' ignorance on this social issue, his prejudice against women, or his ability to discern fact from fiction, it has now been completely removed. With hope that his prejudice results from the ignorance alone, I'll suggest that he indulge in some research. It may interest him to see the incredible number of married persons who have and do receive welfare benefits or the staggering number of complaints against those who intentionally withhold financial and emotional support from their children. it may ease his "self-esteem" concern to realize the vast number that appear to have no problem steadily creating more children. Finally, I challenge him to consider his own statements regarding the legislation of morality when carelessly suggesting that the act of marriage somehow improves the lives of children.

otis' research would be worthless due to his information would come from fox news.

Which told Romney he was going to win by a landslide.

For which I am GRATEFUL they were WRONG.

Great response, Otis. You nailed it.

The only thing otis nailed was a worthless hubris rant. Also Teresa must have gotten into otis' Kool-Aid !!!!!!!!! LMAO!!!

"S," I agree with your characterization of my remarks with two exceptions. First, the comment clearly distinguishes single mothers from the errant distribution of compelled taxpayer kindness that is truly responsible for the disintegration of the family. Secondly, I selected, "profound," rather than, "whole," not a small distinction. While you may disagree with my opinion, please allow me to assure you I do not choose my words carelessly.
