Huntsville Utilities to lower natural gas rates

How did the council vote? I'd like to know who supported this tax increase.

As usual, Tiffany misrepresented the real story. DU's portion of the rates, which excludes commodity and transportation charges, have not changed in over 10 years. This change to the ordinance only provides the mechanism to determine if and when future increases should occur.

@Bob - Gas rates are not going up. In fact they have been declining steadily for over 3 years. All natural gas rates are relatively low right now because of the market price of natural gas. Natural gas markets have experienced a glut of supply along with reduced demand since 2008, therefore DU has paid less for natural gas and DU's gas customers have benefited from lower rates. DU's gas rates are lower than Huntsville already and are adjusted monthly to pass along the benefit of lower commodity prices. This has nothing to do with the cost of transportation/distribution.

@William - The article clearly says "the council unanimously approved the plan". Where I come from, that means everyone. Natural gas is an optional, and usually preferable, fuel source for heating, water heating and cooking. Since when is that a tax?

You know TaxAnders voted for it. Gotta keep that son with a job.

Anders son works for DU or works for the city?? They are raising fees on the people. Call it what you will, it is still a tax.

Pay attention, it ties the price to the Bureau of Labor index. It does not necessarily go up. Any time it goes up, they must notify the council & the Council has the option to block it.

Show me where it says it is tied to the Labor Index Tuna. Show me in this article where it says that. Just because the city CAN do something doesn't mean they will. Why would they even do this if not to raise it??? You can try that nonsense with other people TUNA, but you just voted to raise our taxes and the people will not forget it. The city council has to take action to stop it from occurring. FAT (like Kirby) CHANCE. You just got your taxes raised folks.

The article didn't have to say that. I did say that and it is fact. Call DU & ask if you don't believe it. Some people just like to name call and complain. The facts just get in the way of a good story!

Tax increase. You said pay attention like it was in the story. Who cares what you say. You can't be believed because you campaigned on the penny sales tax cut and now you're passing back door tax increases.

You're both wrong. Increases are tied to the CPI-U, not the BLS. They are certainly not automatic and the city council always has the final say.
