Dear Daily,

Mr. Beard is obviously going through a tough time right now and for you to be adding fuel to the fire is very upsetting. Mr. Beard is a good man and does a great job as our Coroner. I know what the state law requires, and I know that he is using taxpayer gas, which if you get right down to it, Hartselle and Madison about the same distance from where he works. I am sure the taxpayers, at least those which know Mr. Beard, will not mind him driving the extra 2 or 3 miles a day while he get things in order. How dare you, just for the sake of a story, follow this man around and meddle in his personal business. I know it is the responsibility of the press to keep taxpaying citizens informed on what their elected officials are doing, but come on. Where is your compassion?

My heart goes out to anybody that is going thru a divorce, I know because I have been thru one, death I think is easier to accept than a divorce, death is finally, but divorce may not be. We need to be praying for them both.

Mr. Beard may or may not be going through a tough time. Sometimes a divorce can be very liberating, and since he is the one that filed first....

But whether or not he's having a tough time is not the issue. The issue is that he is in violation of a law that I'm sure he must have been aware of when he ran for office. One more example of how our local elected officials seem to think that they can do whatever they want to do once elected despite clear rules to the contrary for their actions. No apartments available in Decatur? Give me a break. And yes, I do mind him driving the extra miles on my money. Keep up the good work, Daily!

Give me a break, state law or no state law, why focus on where he lives? Police officers live outside of their existing county or city limits all over the state. Besides, I drive to Madison everyday and I've driven to Hartselle, they are approx the same distance. If he's in violation of state code then have him leave the car at Raceway by I65, this is fickle and immature of anyone to make a deal of this. I think the OBAMA healthcare plan is more of a problem than this.

Beard filed for divorce from his wife, Patricia Beard, in July in Morgan County Circuit Court. He alleged incompatibility of temperament and an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.

She filed a counter-claim in August denying Beard’s allegations and alleged adultery against Beard.

The coroner denied his estranged wife’s allegations in a response to her counter-complaint.

I do not know Russ Beard on a personal level and do not care what he does in his personal time. During his time in office, I have lost two close family members. Mr. Beard treated myself and my family with great dignity and respect. He helped us through two extremely difficult times. I simply cannot imagine anyone who could do a finer job as coroner of Morgan County. As for apartments in Decatur... last year I lost my home in the foreclosure crisis. There were no apartments immediately available in areas that I felt comfortable having my daughter (same age as Russ's daughter) in. I moved to Madison for a short time until something was available in Decatur. Please just let Mr. Beard do the job that he as done so well in the past, and leave the personal mistakes he may or may not have made out of it. We have all made mistakes.

Would any of you want to live in the apartments in Decatur. I may be a snob, but I certainly wouldn't! There are no decent apartments here.

A sheriff who left his family and starves the prisoners.

Another getting free work with trees that he would never have paid for if the Decatur Daily hadn't caught them . He paid a lot less than we would have paid if the same job was done for us.

This has nothing to do with him getting a divorce it is clearly a blatant decision to live outside the jurisdiction that he was elected to serve. I find it hard to believe it is a temporary situation when we all know he has presumably signed a lease.

I for one am glad to know that The Decatur Daily has disclosed the situation. How else would we know what our elected officials are doing? Please don't think the officials you have elected will be forth coming about what they are doing.

I do care about their private lives.. Look at the people in Congress. Someone better start caring about their private lives. Linda, You don't know what you are talking about. He had to sign a lease to live in an apt. and it does make a difference otherwise, we could vote for people in Huntsville or anywhere to city and county offices. He knew when he took the job what the rules were and he needs to resign and pay back the money it has cost the county to go back and forth to work everyday or what ever he charges for gas. He needs to give the car up and resign. You must be his relative.

There is no way to look at this except through the eyes of the law - Russ Beard violated the trust of the people when he blatantly went against the laws and rules he agreed to adhere to when he was elected as Coroner. Feel sorry for the adultrous man if you choose, but my sympathy is for his family. To be dragged through this is disgraceful for them. Roselawn, well they get what they deserve. You can't walk over good, honest, respectable people for the benefit of a corrupt couple and not expect to be drug through the trash. The good people of Decatur have a choice - the choice being to NOT use Roselawn for your funeral services. Your business is only as good as the employees you retain.

Joseph, thank you for voicing your opinion. You are certainly entitled to it... as am I. Never once did I say that Mr. Beard was the "only one" capable of treating people with dignity and respect. I was just making the point that what is going on in his personal life does not seem to have affected the job he does. As for your assumptions about my living arrangements, the payments on the house foreclosed on were almost $2000 a month. I temporarily rented a "decent" apartment for $1000 a month, and am now renting a house in Decatur for $1200 a month. As I said earlier, we all make mistakes. Yours, Joseph, was jumping to conclusions about my, and perhaps others' character.

Who says he has to live in Decatur? The LAW says he has to live in Morgan County and the last time I checked, that includes Hartselle, Priceville, Somerville, Falkville, and Trinity...in addition to Decatur. I find it impossible to believe that there are no decent apartments in any of these places. Hmmm....but the Daily has already proven him to be a liar, right?

Mr. Beard has violated State Election Laws and his lack of judgment and moral character are a direct reflection on Roselawn Funeral Home and its values. If Mr. Beard cannot be trusted by those who have elected him to the office of Coroner, I would question anyone allowing him to handle the funeral arrangements of their loved ones. THANKFULLY, the people of Decatur have a choice!

Exactly how did I jump to conclusions about your character? I ASKED about what you thought, I didn't STATE what you thought.

I think what is going on in his personal life is probably affecting his ability to do his job. It's already caused him to CHOOSE to break a commonly known law in regards to his job by living in a different county, and this is something anyone on the street can see. So I wonder how his personal life is affecting his job that is NOT visible by anyone. If it were me, I'd live in a hotel until I could get a “decent” house or apartment (which I think would take four weeks tops).

My point was that YOUR reasons for living in Madison don't hold up as excuses for why Mr. Beard can't find temporary living arrangements in Morgan County. Do you hold a public office that requires your residence to be in Morgan County? I don't know, but I know Mr. Beard does. I personally think there are PLENTY of very decent apartments or houses for rent in the WHOLE of Morgan County. I also think his house hasn't been foreclosed on, so in comparison it's not a far fetched idea that his credit check for securing said rental residence somewhere in Morgan County would be far easier than it would be for someone whose house was just foreclosed on. Especially since it seems landlords aren't as picky as they used to be.

We should boot him out. I live in an apartment in Decatur and in a not very safe part of town. Why is Russ better than I am. If I broke the law I would have to pay. He is taking our hard earned money that we pay in taxes and using for his own benefit. Where is justice in that? Does the law state that a person has to be a resident to qualify to run for the office or does it say that they become ineligible to serve if they move out of the county? There was an attorney generals opinion regarding this very matter regarding a former chairman of the morgan county comission {Thorton Dick Fleming}. Mr Fleming moved to Huntsville alabama after he was reelected. the AG ruled that the law only said that he had to be a county resident to qualify. He was allowed to complete his term. Russ needs to leave the car at the courthouse and continue to serve. His personal life is none of anybody's business. That can come up when he runs for reelection if he chooses to do so.

Whether or not he is cheating on his wife or not, is none of our business. He is a good man, and does a Hell of a job. He is courteous and compassionate to the families that he works with during their time of crisis. It is pretty funny that the Daily reports this kind of news. Like I said to begin with, technically he is in violation of the law. So what they should do is take his car away or something and maybe that would be fair, but to bash the man and have all of his personal business spread out in the news is ridiculous. Our country is in a mess because of people like him and other elected officials who think they can lie, steal and cheat and get away with it. Well, those days are over. Seems, like the latest on the saga of Payton Place at Roselawn continues.. Not only is Beard and his girlfriend employees there.. so, is a man who is manager over the cemetery who last year was suppose to have attacked an employee who worked in the cemetery. She said he spent lot's of time in the maintenance building drinking beer. She said he stole equiptment from the cemetery and attacked her on more than one occasion in the maintenance building and that she was under the care of a doctor for her nerves when she decide to report what was going on to her out of town bosses. She said they came to town paid her off and fired her. She said the other employees were afraid of the manager and wouldn't speak up about what he was doing.

Since I found out about that a person told me the same cover up went on at a Lawrence county Funeral home where he worked and that was covered up too. Ladies be careful when visiting your loved ones graves.

Seems SCI and Roselawn needs to clean up.
