We want better schools.
Teachers, principals, workers and volunteers scrub, staple, tape and hammer at schools all over Decatur and Morgan County to put a fresh face on wrinkling and sometimes crumbling facades.
But schools are expensive. Middle schools cost upward of $20 million. A new high school will cost about $60 million.
You know what that means. The ‘T’ word will be uttered.
If we aren’t willing to add additional funding here and there for our schools, so be it. But we understand the consequences. Schools are being built in areas all around us, and that drives economies and home sales and values. A new school is an investment, and it’s a responsibility we all share.
Our leaders have the value of historically low interest rates to borrow dollars. But the bill still comes due, and it’s our responsibility to step up as taxpayers.
Like the doctor says: This will only hurt a little.
No schools are on the building blocks yet, so there’s no need to worry right now.
When the time comes, though, let’s be prepared to do what must be done to invest in our children and our future.

NO NEW TAXES! READ OUR LIPS!
LIVE WITHIN EXISTING MEANS!
THE DECATUR CLOWN COUNCIL will undoubtedly pass ANOTHER sales tax increase, then get voted out like last time! TRAITORS!
NO NEW TAXES! READ OUR LIPS!
NOBAMA!
Our education structure says a lot about our community. Education is the solution to far more problems than higher taxes. An educated community is a better community. We should all do whatever is necessary to ensure that our citizens, young and older, have the highest level education of the best quality. This insurance includes fostering a healthy respect for education and an ambition to obtain it. Education is not an issue only for the parents of school-aged children. It is an issue for all of us.
Thank you, Joe.
Great job Joe.
Joe, the problem with respect is that it must be earned. It is difficult to respect that which our schools produce, i.e., students that are politically and sexually aware, yet stupid spellers, poor mathematicians, and non-readers. Over the last few decades the more money schools received, the worse the performance as more and more money led to lower and lower academic standards. As long as we can agree that more money is obviously not the answer, I share your sentiment. Please ask "Limestone" and "Joe" to have their fellow teachers' union colleagues chime in with additional praise for your comment.
In case you haven"t heard the country is broke. As obamacare kicks in many small business's will go out of business.Others will be forced to cut hours.More people have went on disability than have gotten FULL time jobs in the last four years.People nearing retirement are seeing their 401k's dwindling as they are also probably facing higher taxation on them.We may very well be facing another recession.Gas prices are going to climb as utility bills go up.A new school isn't going to raise test scores. While a nice idea the financial future of too many people is too uncertain at this time to take on a multimillion project like this.
@ Well... It's a gloomy world Well and it's all Obama's fault. Get off you lazy rear end and do something in your community: volunteer your time, help out the schools with your time do something positive, help at city hall with more than critisim.. Do same in Montgomery. Visit your reps, the Governor, the local and state boards of education. Volunteer at one of the many hospitals to help the doctors and nurses and especially the patients that you say are dieing because of Obama care. They need more than your words. They need your presence! If you think there's a need for less regulation and smaller government tell it to those in power. It's so easy to sit and critize and give shotgun solutions of less government controls but it's another thing to be able to offer viable solutions. That takes some personal responsibility and serious research but others are doing it and I know you can too.
@ Otis. Your sarcasim was misinterprited My apologies. BTW I am not a teacher only a person who had the benefits of a good education and one who was taught at an early age that education was an important part of a well rounded individual, not ony for the sake of better pay but also for the mere sake of enlightenment.
Joe ,first of all let me say you can kiss my a$$.I didn't say people were dying because of obamacare. My family supported this country for 20 years while my husband served in the military, part of that time as a Navy Seal.We have 3 grown children who are responsible and productive Americans. We were very active in their education and in their schools as we moved all over the country. My husband is still working as hard as he can so maybe we can retire someday.I help with our grandchildren so they can be PRODUCTIVE citizens instead of helpness morons waiting for the government to take care of them. This is not the time for the city to take on a multimillion dollar project and I stand by that.If you want to think the country's financial situation is all rainbows and unicorns that's fine.BTW my husband accepts your thanks for his service.
