County hires former Daily reporter for $48,000 yearly
By Ben Montgomery
The Decatur Daily

Sheryl Marsh, a former reporter at The Daily, has been named to the newly created position of communications and community relations director by the Morgan County Commission.

The position involves public relations, producing a quarterly newsletter and serving as a liaison with local non-profit organizations and boards, such as Community Action, United Way and the Mental Health Center.

Commission Chairman Ray Long said the position will last one year, at which point the commission will evaluate it and determine whether to make it permanent. The position pays about $48,000 a year.

well she couldn't get the facts straight in Daily stories.... I'm guessing now we can expect "less than factual" reporting from the county.

Tick tock

Look out for a discrimination suit if she is not renewed.

The best public relations the county can have is by the wise use of the tax dollar. They have failed on this one.

What does this say about the Daily that their reporters will leave for 48k. Either greatly under paid or sinking ship.

Why is the salary necessary to advertise unless the Decatur Daily is trying to create some sort of controversy? Tacky.

Well the County Commission deserves this one. They have been working in what seems like relative harmony for a while now. I guess we can kiss that good bye now and back to being the laughingstock of Alabama once again. Good grief people she kept the pot stirred all the time why would you want to have that head ache on the county pay roll, my tax dollars wasted.

Imagine she was making about half that at the Daily

Holy shit. Are you kidding me?

Where and when was this "newly created" job posted?

She sure is a great choice, but I think your "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer" will bite you in the butt !

Sheryl Marsh is not the Commission's friend.

Hey guys, let's not judge Sheryl before she even goes to work. Give her a break. She's one of the few courthouse reporters who was always fair to me. I think she'll do well.

Getting to leave the Daily is the best thing that can happen to anyone. Good luck to Sheryl.

Sheriff Ana Franklin better watch her back, she will be all up in Sheriff Dept business, more than she usually is!

Tax payer money being wasted... The County commission has no idea what a bad idea this is. Not to mention her salary, there are people who have been employed 20 years are longer not making this kind of money. The commission laid off people last year and this year they are wasting money on this made up position.

She undoubtedly made way less at the Daily.

I'm guessing the Daily will hire no one to replace her. Instead, she'll write press releases on the county's dime and the Daily will print the press releases. The Daily gets free news and the county dictates their news as they want it.
