Decatur considering rate hikes at Point Mallard
By Tiffeny Owens
The Decatur Daily

Admission fees could be going up at Point Mallard’s water park and ice rink this year, with a proposal going before the Decatur City Council on Tuesday morning.

Park officials want to raise the daily ticket prices at the water park from $18 to $20 for ages 12-61 and from $13 to $15 for ages 5-11, 62 and older and military. For ice complex rental, the price would increase from $200 to $225 per hour with a two-hour minimum.

The council will meet 10 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall to consider the rate increases.

When Point Mallard opens Memorial Day weekend, it plans to unveil $3 million in upgrades with the addition of a Lazy River attraction, new speed slides, concessions, bathrooms and entrance on the west side of the park. Officials expect the new rides to increase attendance and plan to use the extra revenue to pay off the project.

Start charging at least half price for city workers and their families.

Such a waste of money! It's not worth the $18 that they charge! I sure wouldn't pay $20. Hartselle's pool is a whole lot nicer.

There has been a price increase each year for the past several years. While the upgrades and improvements have been really nice, we are pricing ourselves out of business. The expected increase in attendance may not materialize due to the increase in cost. $15 a day for a 5,6,7,8,9 year old is extreme. $20 a day for everyone else is on the edge of extreme. A family of 4, to spend the day, will spend in excess of $100. There are many other options a family can do that amount of money. While we should all be proud of Point Mallard, especially the way it's been managed lately to operate at a profit, another price increase seems like the most lazy way to ensure a profit. Lets think a bit more out of the box. Maybe we could tie a day at the wave pool with a day at the golf course or partner with the Space and Rocket Center or Early Works Museum for a package that would provide value for a family while keeping some out of towners in town for an extra day. It is time to be more creative than ever.

I would not go there if it were free.

..and we are shocked and this is news why?? We are afterall talking about the City of Decatur.

Increasing rates at a park that's making a profit doesn't make sense. Take the money you are going to spend on that old railroad station and use that to improve Point Mallard if needed. After renovation that old stucture are you going to chage admission fee to see it? Let it go and use the money for roads, recreation centers, senior centers, etc.. That's where it will do more good.

Another way to save money is stop using consultant firms. Doesn't anybody in Decatur govt. know how to jjudge costs? Or is this money going to firms that help mayors get elected?

WOW! Y'all are brutal. I've seen complaints for years every time something about Point Mallard is printed in the paper. Whining of no improvements or additions to Point Mallard. Now they hear your cries and add what seems to be really a nice new lazy river and other stuff and you think they're doing this free or worse yet, being irresponsible with funds? The cost of doing business includes improvements ESPECIALLY for a 40+ year old facility. If y'all want it to make money, it has to be updated a lot more often than it has, but it takes money to make money. Check out admission prices virtually anywhere else, then add drive time, parking fees, etc...then compare it to the amount most people pay to get in PM then no fee for parking. With the season pass sale point mallard does each year its even a better deal! Dont even go there in comparing PM to the new Hartselle pool. Psh! I for one am glad they finally added something virually all ages can and WILL enjoy and I will be there enjoying it and I bet a lot of you complainers will too! LOL

Good for you Rene! Seems like the "regulars" on here just want to complain about everything! Unfortunately, that has become our society as a whole. Too busy looking at the negatives of everything instead of counting their blessings.

what about season passes? Most everyone in Decatur has a season pass anyway so this increase will mostly hit the people from out of town. $20 dollars for a fun day is not that bad.
