Decatur girls win their season opener

Decatur High wore down Hazel Green on the road Tuesday to open its girls basketball season with a 45-34 victory.

The Lady Raiders' pressed full court the entire game and that turned a three-point deficit after three quarters into a win.

"We've been teaching the girls that we might not overwhelm people early, but our conditioning might get to them later in the game," Decatur coach Brad Boy said.

Constance Steele paced Decatur with 13 points, followed by Tanesha Johnson with 12 and O'Neisha Hampton 10.

West Morgan 62, East Lawrence 49: Sydney Sanders and Hannah Amos combined for 27 points, leading West Morgan past rival East Lawrence in both teams' season opener.

Sanders led West Morgan (1-0) with 15 points and Amos added 12. Jamia Gibson and Heather Amos scored 10 points each.

West Morgan carried a 29-24 lead into halftime.

Angel Bolden led East Lawrence (0-1) with 20 points, while Aundrea Simpson added 18.

East Limestone 54, Clements 25: Brennan Crabtree scored 22 points and Bailey Speer added nine, leading East Limestone past Clements.

Rachael Diamond added eight points for the Indians.

Boys basketball

Hazel Green 65, Decatur 34: The Red Raiders fell behind 9-0 to start the game against last year's state runner-up and never recovered.

Sean Elliott hit three of five 3-point attempts to lead Decatur (0-1) with 11 points.

Lewis Sullivan had 14 points to lead four Trojans in double figures.

Priceville 54, Brewer 49: The Bulldogs rallied Tuesday to spoil Doug Oldacre's first game as Brewer's coach.

Priceville overcame a five-point deficit with a series of steals in the final quarter to claim the win.

Luke Mason led Priceville with 21 points, and Mark McLendon and Jacob Crow each had eight. Austin Morris scored 12 to lead Brewer and Coty Benitez added 10.

East Limestone 63, Ardmore 35: Jordan Gandy poured in 14 points, leading East Limestone past rival Ardmore

East Limestone raced out to a commanding lead, carrying a 40-11 cushion into halftime.

Adam Saylor scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Indians, while Nick Walsh had 10 points and five rebounds.
