Decatur officer accused of 'busting' wife's nose

Archie Letson jr.

A Decatur police officer had an altercation with his wife, "busting" her nose and leading to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge against him, a complaint filed in Lawrence County District Court said.

Sgt. Archie Letson was placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest Friday on a charge of third-degree domestic violence harassment, Decatur police said.

Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said Letson’s wife reported that she and Letson, 34, had an altercation at their Trinity home in the early morning hours Wednesday. She obtained the warrant for his arrest.

The complaint filed by Amanda Letson also says Archie Letson threatened her, causing her to fear for her safety.

Decatur police spokesman Lt. John Crouch said Letson, a night-shift patrol supervisor, turned himself in to the sheriff’s department as soon as he found out about the warrant Friday evening.

Letson was booked into Lawrence County Jail at 8:34 p.m. and released at 9:50 p.m., jailers said. The sheriff said Letson posted $1,000 bail.

The Decatur Police Department will conduct an internal review, Crouch said.

Letson, formerly an investigator with the Organized Crime Unit, DPD’s narcotics team, was promoted to sergeant in June. He was hired by the department Nov. 1, 2001.

A Decatur police officer is on paid administrative leave after his arrest on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in Lawrence County, police said Monday.

Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said Letson’s wife filed the charge. She reported that she and Letson, 34, had an altercation at their Trinity home in the early morning hours Wednesday.

A copy of the complaint filed in District Court was not available Monday.

There is no LAW when the LAW BREAKS THE LAW!!!!!!!

Pathetic scumbag.

How do you know he's guilty?

Look at the cop haters, GUILTY before a trial..well done people!

All I have to do to NOT trust the police is read the paper... 'to protect and serve'... riiiiiight. How about 'to oppress and abuse'. It's either this kind of thing OR it's opening fire on mentally challenged people... trigger happy... above the law attitudes... Hey... and that's just what's reported.

If he is in fact guilty then he should be fired and jailed. If this turns out to be unfounded, she sould go to jail for fling a false report. Before we all jump to conclusions (unless any of you were there and witnessed this happen live), let our juducial process take its course.

I agree with Tony, people are so quick just because it's in the Decatur Daily to prejudge. Ink on paper doesn't make it so. There are always two sides to a story, let the process work before pronouncing your sentence upon him.

sounds as if raymond bow'd up with the police and got the dog squeeze stomped out of him. he probably couldn't wait to get to jail!!!!!!!!!

My thoughts exactly, George.

Maybe she deserved it. Has anyone thought about that? Remember, needed killin' is a valid defense in the LC!

How is he placed on paid leave. In Alabama if you are ARRESTED for domestic violence you can never own or possess a gun!!! How can he ever do his job as a policeman anywhere if he cannot possess a gun???

The Decatur Daily is no place for people's private business no matter where they work!!!

Mary your statement is the smartest on here!!!!!!! ;) Private business no matter who you are shouldnt be aired in public especially in the daily!!!!!!!! INNOCENT

until proven guilty regardless!!!

A public servant being arrested is everyones business. If you go to get a job at a temp. agency they run a background check. Guess what, they see everything you have been arrested for not just what you have been convicted of. All for an $8 an hour job!! Arrests are public record and someone who is supposed to uphold the laws should very well be public record!! And by the way Mary and Don how is a man busting his wife's nose a private matter? It is against the law and the COP is a COWARD!

@John from Hartselle - maybe she deserved it? Um, no. No one "deserves" to be assaulted, IF that's what happened.

James- it was a joke.

I do think you can own and posses a gun, even if arrested for any reason, UNTIL you are CONVICTED of a FELONY...NOT a MISDEMEANOR...but i could be wrong, please someone WHO KNOWS clarify....

Billy G you are correct. You cannot own a gun if convicted of a felony. Does not apply to misdemeanors.

Innocent till proven guilty. Dont Judge others.
