East Lawrence quarterback Terrance Deloney has been named the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Priceville on Friday.
Deloney scored on runs of 47, 58 and 79 yards in the third quarter and added a 35-yarder in the fourth quarter to rally the Eagles from a three-touchdown deficit to a 42-35 victory. Deloney finished with 314 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries, while passing for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Deloney’s final totals — 416 yards and six touchdowns — allowed him to beat out two other finalists for the award, Carver-Montgomery quarterback Jeremy Johnson and Susan Moore’s Preston Kent.
Johnson accounted for 362 yards and five touchdowns in a 46-20 win over Auburn. He finished 11 of 18 passing for 248 yards and two touchdowns, while running 10 times for 114 yards and three scores.
Kent pushed Susan Moore to a 26-20 victory over Ashville when he picked up a blocked field goal behind the line of scrimmage in overtime, fought off several tacklers, and scored on a 9-yard run. He ran for 123 yards, caught seven passes for 67 yards and a TD, and scored a 2-point conversion with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Hanceville’s Brontae Harris is the ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week. He snagged four interceptions and returned one for a touchdown to lead the Bulldogs to a 12-0 victory over Winfield.
The defensive/special teams finalists are Fort Payne’s Logan McPherson and McIntosh’s Shaquille Law.
McPherson kicked a 57-yard field goal, tying for third-longest in AHSAA history, in a 24-6 victory over Boaz. He also made three extra points and punted three times for a 35.0 average, including a 47-yarder that was downed at the Boaz 15-yard line and a 41-yarder that was downed at the Boaz 3. On kickoffs, he put three of five into the end zone.
Law scored four touchdowns in four different ways in a 40-31 victory over Fruitdale — a 62-yard interception return, a 72-yard fumble return, an 80-yard kickoff return, and a 38-yard run.
