Delphi plant to close today; workers lament its passing
Delphi closes Friday.
A three-word sentence captures the facts, but not the essence, of the end of the company’s 35-year presence in our area.
“Delphi” is singular, but those affected by …

The beginning of the end for GM was when it threw the towel in and gave it's Limestone facility to the UAW, contrary to the vote of local employees.
If someone is having to commute 1hr. 45 min. each way after working through this debacle at Delphi, GM executives should pay for their gas out of their incredidibly outrageous salaries. They could afford it easily.
oops...i mean incredibly!! havent had my coffee yet folks!!!
The end is caused by these cheap and child labor made cars everyone loves to drive. People do not think about buying American made and keeping Americans with a job - they just want a cheap-made, cheap-priced, rice-burning Mazda or Toyota. Unions fight hard for what they get and earn every bit of it. Every worker wants better wages, health insurance, etc.
Virginia, I don't think you can really consider Toyota a child-laboring company anymore. We have one right here in our area. It employees many of my friends. i also drove a Toyota vehicle for 4 years and never had a single problem out of it. Can't say the same for the "American" made vehicles I have owned...Chevy and Dodge.
Also, if you ask just about any employee who worked for Delphi, they will tell you that the Union is what got them in this fiasco to begin with. Yes, it is great for the employee who barely graduates highschool or has a GED to be making 20-25 dollars an hour, but it is not economical. The union negotiated these employees right into the situation they are in now. And if it continues as is, I wouldn't be surprised to see GM close its doors completely. They have a long road ahead of them to get their vehicles up to the same quality as Toyota or Honda.
unions have broken the back of industry in this country. in theory, organized labor was to protect good workers. instead, typically the ones being protected are sorry low life drunks dope heads and folks too lazy to do an honest days work for a fair wage. you know who you are..... way to go!!!!!! just focus on the good times, when you made 40 bucks an hour to not hit a lick at a snake. i'm generalizing of course but some destroyed delphi for everyone. unfortunately, the japs have beat us at our own game. toyota in huntsville for example ... quality product, fair wage for workers, no union.
Wow, R....I'm sure everyone on here appreciates your "patriotic state of mind." I've drove Chevy for years & never had problems. You can bet I'll purchase another one. China thanks you....I don't.
Randy, yes I am very patriotic, thank you very much. But, I refuse to pay for an automobile that might last me 150,000, with numerous problems, when I can I buy one that will last for 300,000 and have very little problems. Yes, I speak from experience. And, exactly where do you think the money is going when people buy Toyota? There is a plant in Huntsville. Do you not think that my purchase is helping to pay their salary? Do you shop at Wal-Mart? If you do, you are supporting China. Look on almost any package sold in Wal-Mart and it will say "MADE IN CHINA". Bet you are supporting them too. Oh, by the way, the products that you buy in Wal-Mart are not made here in the USA!!! Toyota, Honda, and Nissan at least put factories over here so it helps our economy. Don't ever say I am not patriotic. I just choose to use my money more wisely than some others.
Yes, there is a Toyota plant in Huntsville; it makes engines, not cars.
The union did the people in
too much too fast
yest a lot @ the plant just sitting
because of the union
Kay....you don't get it.
toyota in huntsville ,honda in tallegega, hyndia in montgomery, mrecedes i n toscaloosa, big auto plant on i85 just across the ga. line. YES BUY AMERICAN, BUT REMEMENBER THERE MANY THINGS MADE IN AMERICA!
Virginia....................the only cheaply made vehicle I have ever owned was a GM 2002 Quad Cab truck I bought from Tony Moore. Leather seats??????? only half of it. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER AMERICAN MADE VEHICLE AGAIN. That truck stayed in the shop more than it did in my garage. I now own a Honda, for 7 years, and I have never had any problems with it.
As some others have already pointed out, and still some others are apparently not getting it, many "foreign" auto makers have plants in the United States, so they old argument of "buy American" really does not have the same meaning as much as it once did. With outsourcing as it is, most any brand of car has parts made from various countries, including the Unite States.
The state of Alabama has lured many foreign based automakers in recent years, making it almost the "Detroit of the South". Yet during that same time Delphi was failing? The difference? Many others have already stated it....the union. What started out as a necessity to protect the workers was turned into something to protect lazy people from losing their jobs and to also pay the salary of full time "national union reps".
Was Delphi and GM poorly mismanaged and did executives make outrageous salaries they probably did not deserve? Yes and probably. However, though UAW might have helped the hourly workers with a "soft landing" during the shutdown of Delphi, I know many middle to lower management salaried people who also put their blood, sweat, and tears into that plant and are not getting the pensions they put the time in to deserve. My father-in-law is one of those that moved from Michigan to open up the plant and after all those years of hard work and long work weeks as a maintenance supervisor, he is not retiring with the benefits he deserves. Like somebody said, if you ask most workers, they will tell you that the union might not have been the only reason for the plant's demise, but it played a very key role in it.
I can't say it any better than Craig above. I worked there for many years.
virgina.
A toyota, made in the US, has much better quality that a US made GM car.
The unions ruined the automakers. I don't shed a tear for them.
Thanks UAW for ruining the Athens plant, Thanks for nothing.
Let's get real! If we didn't let every foriegn car into America, we wouldn't be having this trouble today with all of our American plants closing and so many people losing their jobs. Foriegn plants in America in the long run are not helping us. They send most of the money back to their country. I can't figure out why you cant see the writing on the wall. Its there in black and white. Wise up America!
uh retired.... duh hondas are made in america too
