maybe tell how long the field goal was. Just curious.
It was about 30 yards.
Bob Jones didn’t gain the final edge until two seconds left in the game on a 27-yard field goal that put a dagger in Decatur’s season.
4th paragraph
Judy, it's in the fourth paragraph of the story: "Bob Jones didn’t gain the final edge until two seconds left in the game on a 27-yard field goal that put a dagger in Decatur’s season."
Are you really going to write this article and not mention that decatur's qb played with a fractured leg and couldn't run. Or the missed call on bob jones fumble that would have given Decatur the game? You need more column inches.
It's been a long time since I've been any prouder to be a Decatur alumnus than after watching this year's Red Raiders. Those guys had the biggest heart of any team I've ever seen. When playing teams from schools (and talent pools) over twice as big they just lined up and played their guts out on EVERY play. They seemed to be saying, "You may be bigger than us. You may be faster than us. You may be stronger than us. But if you want to beat us, you're going to have to earn it... every play of the game!" Only two teams (Bob Jones twice and Florence, two of the largest high schools in the state) were able to earn a win on these guys, and Decatur played all three games on the road. Even when behind by two scores late against Florence, they NEVER gave up, and came very close to putting themselves in position to pull off an amazing comeback. That run by #34 Desmond Lavelle in the fourth quarter last night was just amazing. He just refused to be brought down by the first 15 or 20 attempted tackles! If Ben Neill had been on two healthy legs last night, things might have ended differently.
By the way, how does a punter get his leg fractured getting sandwiched by two defenders without even drawing "roughing the kicker"? Even so, these guys came together, overcame it and posted one of the most impressive playoff wins I've seen in a long time. On the road at Oxford. And I've been around long enough to remember those playoff runs Perrin & company put on back in the late 70's. This Bob Jones game felt a lot like that Mountain Brook loss in the semifinals, when Perrin got up from the bottom of the pile on fourth and goal with the ball under his chest, his waist on the goal line and the officials spotted the ball six inches short of the goal line.
Greg--Maybe Coach Adcock didn't want her to put any excuses in the paper? Just a thought
