ROGERSVILLE — Firefighters from five volunteer departments battled a blaze at one of the town’s historic homes this morning, officials said.
The fire was reported at 23 College St., about 8:25 a.m., officials said.
“I was standing in the parking lot of Town Hall when I got the call. I looked up and could see the thick smoke rolling up,” said Police Chief Terry Holden.
Holden said the owner, Tom Waddell, was at home but the town’s maintenance supervisor Dennis White was able to get Waddell out of the house without him being injured.
“Dennis went by and saw Tom throwing a pillow out of the window that was on fire and then go back inside the house,” Holden said. “Dennis stopped and went in and got him out. (Tom) had gone back to try and to the fire out, but it was too late.”
Holden said according to Waddell the house is build around an old log cabin. The log cabin, he said, was built in 1841.
Firefighters at the scene said the fire started in the bedroom.
