The on-going project to upgrade the Hartselle Fine Arts Center to a handicap accessible facility has a new goal. As the first phase of the wheelchair accessible ramp and elevator project rounds toward an end, the center hopes to renovate the restroom accommodations to make them special needs accessible.
The center is commemorating the date of 12-12-12 to raise funds for the restroom project. Much like the center’s 11-11-11 Project for the elevator project, Fine Arts Center board members and staff are asking community members to donate $12 before Dec. 12, 2012, Fine Arts Center Executive Director Kelley Redmond said.
“One hundred percent of this will go towards the restrooms,” she said.
The Fine Arts Center board members had hoped to be approved for a capital improvement grant for the renovation of the center’s restrooms but were not eligible this year, so they went to Plan B. Last year’s 11-11-11 Project raised nearly $12,000 toward the elevator project. They need at least $10,000 for the restroom renovation, Redmond said
The goal is for the renovation of the restrooms to begin immediately following the completion of Phase I of the elevator-ramp project, she said.
The 96-year-old historic Burleson Elementary School building is leased to the fine arts organization by the Hartselle Board of Education. The elevator-ramp project, designed by Godwin Barnett Woods Architects of Decatur, will include a wheeler accessible ramp in phase one, and then finish with the addition of an elevator. The elevator will provide handicap access to the basement, and first and second floors of the building.
Redmond said the Fine Arts Center still needs almost $150,000 to complete the entirety of the elevator project. The full project will cost about $300,000.
In other news, the Fine Arts Center will host an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. The night also will include the kick-off of the 2012 Arts and Crafts on College Street. The arts and craft event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, and 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9. There will be door prizes for the arts and crafts show.
