Sheriff Barlett is doing a wonderful job at keeping our county safe and getting meth off of the streets!! The prisoners are getting enough food; do people honestly think they deserve more than corndogs? If you were not a criminal, you would not be in that position! Keep up the good work Sheriff!!
The fact that he pocketed so much money during his tenure as sheriff is reason enough to think that something was not done right. He knew what the job paid when he ran for sheriff, I wonder if he knew of this sweet deal also. This law should be changed because no one should profit off the suffering or problems of others.
I say give'm bread and water; who's fault is it that they are in jail in the first place? And, if the good ol sheriff amassed that much money during his tenure, let him cover the shortfall.
I like corndogs. I'd like to have a couple right now. It would be nice to have a little mustard to go with them. I'm free to have steak or catfish for supper this evening because I have no trouble staying out of jail. Jail food is part of the punishment for commiting a crime. Quit whining you big bad sissy. You should be dressed in pink and made to work on the roads. If you came in tired this evening you'd be glad to get a couple corndogs.
Reader, until you are placed behind bars and waiting on a trial and had to eat that food, you don't know what your talking about. I worked there and there were people found not guilty of their crimes but were treatd as being guilty. If they could not feed them bcause of money shortage , WHERE DID THE $316,000 come from ? The city serves food like Hamburgers and fries or chips. Is that to much to ask for instead of peanut butter and syrup sandwiches ? Your comment on how good the sheriff is doing, how come you never see his pic at a drug bust instead of bill boards ? Because if you notice they stumble on the meth because of serving a warrent, most are found by accident because they are not spending the needed time to actually search with the dog, places of activities. Don't take me wrong, the deputy's experience in the smells and products used are fantastic with our force and could be used more if given the time to look for these drugs. I'm very proud of the work force of the department but leadership is missing from the TOP.
To the reader from, would you deserve only corndogs if you was in jail? They are people too. If you had someone you loved in there, how would you feel if they didn't get enought eat? Barlett corndog is not doing a good job. Only now is he trying to look like he is doing his job. Election time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its decatur......let em pass a law banning corndogs, then put a convicted felon in office, the crack heads have a lot of experience smelling out drugs, let them be in charge of the drug unit. feed em all steak i dont care, just keep em in jail, where they belong. lets see, you go to jail for what,...... working everyday, paying your bills, not sealing your neighbors lawnmower, not forging your sisters goverment check, not selling crack to your neighbors 14 year old, not beating the hell out of a 80 year old for their goverment check. does anyone out there know how to stay out of jail....
COMMENT BY LYNNE: Why should he be worried about a shortage? Funny, there were never shortages when he got to POCKET the extra money. So now that he's not getting to keep it, there's gonna be a shortfall? How amazing! There are only shortfalls when HE doesn't keep the money.
In my opinion, Bartlett is as crooked as the day is long. I can't wait to see him out of office!
no one should be able to pocket left over money! it should go into a fund..i work for a school feeding kids, ours goes into a fund...i would like my job a whole lot more if we got to pocket the extra, who wouldn't.? that was a law that needed to be changed. let's keep it that way...
Bartlett is and has done a good job as Sheriff. If you stay out of jail you can pick and choose what you want to eat until then Jail is institutional, just like cafeterias . Jail is not Burger King, you don't get it your way! People have choices, if they are at the wrong place at the wrong time then they chose to be there so they pay the consequences. All Alabama sheriff's keep leftover monies, it's been done that way since 1939, way before Bartlett ever took office. Before you anti Bartlett posters get on here with your negative opinions - NO THE FACTS! The inmates eat over 3,000 calories everyday of there lives. Thats more than most people out of jail eat on a daily basis. Inmates LIE because they are mad that there in jail. Do you think that inmates are telling the truth? After all, Most of them are not in the jail for singing in the church choir. I can't imagine an inmate lying!!! Come on people. Not to mention, there are cameras in the kitchen at the jail that run constantly proving that inmates are NOT being underfed. It's also a Fact that Carter appointed this judge and Bartlett being a republican never had a chance in court with him. He is also the most over turned federal judge around. Do your homework before you judge this man. Lets talk about all the Meth labs and robberies, and murders that have been solved since he's been in office. He is a good leader and good leadership does come from the TOP! that's why Morgan County has busted more meth labs than any office in the state of Alabama!
One last thing, if the editors at the Daily were smart journalist, (IF) they would want Bartlett to stay in office because he sells the papers that pad there pockets. If they think for one minute that any of the current opposition will sell as many papers as him they are sadly mistaken.
Bartlett has done a good job at what he was elected twice to do and I'm sure in his third term he will continue fighting crime and putting drug dealers in jail. Everyone I know will be re-electing Bartlett in 2010 and you should do the same. Good Job Greg Bartlett! Just because the paper is against Bartlett, doesn't mean everyone is. There hate for him actually helps him in the county, readers are tired of there constant attacks. It's obvious it's a personal problem they have not a professional journalistic fair & balanced newspaper. Good Luck with the next election to Bartlett. Keep up the good work.
I think the sheriff is out for himself. if there is a shortfall in funds for feeding inmates after the sheriff profited over 300,000 dollars in 3 years then he has concocted another way to swindle those funds. Not all of the prisoners in the jail are there because they are on crack or meth. There are some instances where someone may have been laid off from a job and get behind on child support and found themselves eating corn dogs because there luck turned south. I'm one of those that has paid my support on time every month for eight years but I'm also not naive to the fact that next month I could be sitting there wearing a pink jump suit and made to work the roads. I believe the money should go into a food only fund for all inmates and any leftover money should be in an account that draws interest and left alone in case there is ever a shortfall. If we start having shortfalls then the state or federal government will just have to Anny up more to cover the cost of feeding the inmates....
I don't know whether or not Mr. Bartlett is a good man. I do know that our judicial system says a person is innocent until proven guilty. In that case, prisoners in jail should be treated fairly and fed a balanced, nutritional meal. I agree with the person who says that excess monies should go into a fund and draw interest. I am sure that it is very tempting for a sheriff to cut-corners and pad his own pocket if the opportunity is there. So, remove temptation! I have first-hand knowledge, as do most readers of The Daily, of some of our law enforcement not being models of integrity themselves. Also, there are people put in jail that are victims of over-jealous officers who like to "throw their weight around". They don't seem to care that they are ruining the lives of innocent people. Remember people! Innocent until proven guilty!!
Correction:
I meant over-zealous officers. Anyway, I do hope that Sheriff Bartlett is an honest and upstanding man and only has the best interest of the citizens of Morgan County in his heart.
This is the Daily's attempt to help elect a new Sheriff... that is all this is.... point blank
I was told that Franklin had "Gobs of Experience" when she graduated school in 2002... 7 maybe 8 years WOW that sure isn't alot of experience.
It amazes me how the Morgan County area will elect people out of spite! Bartlett is not doing a bad job... why fix what isn't broke? We have a new jail, more officers, and i didn't die this year... so apparently he is doing something right?
I seriously need to become a Politician... I have no experience... so i have a great chance at it... I am also a firm believer in Armed Citizens...
I also agree that the left over money should be put into a fund, but that is not the law. People should not bash Bartlett because he was doing the same thing as every other Sheriff in Alabama. If that is the only reason people are not going to vote for him in the election, that is ridiculous. He is getting the DRUGS/meth off of the streets the best he can with he few deputies he has on shift each night!!
It is amazing to me that everyone is PRO inmate and ANTI sheriff/depties. The citizens should support their deputies and know that they are risking their lives each day to protect YOU!!! I believe we should have stricter laws and harsher punishment and maybe that will keep people out of jail!!!
