Lexington woman’s murder trial begins
By Tom Smith - TNValleyNow.com

Jury selection began Monday in the murder trial of a Lauderdale County woman accused of killing her mother near Booneville, Miss., in 2010.

Officials with the Mississippi District 1 District Attorney’s office said they expected the jury selection to be completed Monday in the murder trial of Rebecca Jones. Testimony is anticipated to begin this morning.

Jones, 48, 1551 Lauderdale 450, Lexington, which is near the Center Hill community, is charged in connection with the May 11 shooting death of her mother, Jane Jones, 66, according to Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar.

Prentiss County Circuit Judge Jim Ponds will hear the case.

Reports indicate Jane Jones was shot just before 6 p.m. May 11 at her house, 459 Mississippi 4, about four miles east of Booneville.

Jane Jones was shot once in the stomach and once in the upper right arm with a .38-caliber pistol, officials said.

Tolar said it appears the pistol used in the shooting belonged to Rebecca Jones and was found at the scene.

Jane Jones was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville and then flown to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, where she later died, officials said.

Tolar said Rebecca Jones told investigators she came to Mississippi to visit a friend and her mother.

He said apparently she was at her mother’s house about an hour when the shooting happened.

The sheriff said something happened while Rebecca Jones was visiting with her mother that caused the shooting.

“(Rebecca Jones) said she got something off her chest during the visit, so we don’t know if that had anything to do with the shooting or not,” Tolar said at the time of Rebecca Jones’ arrest.

Reports indicate Jane Jones called 911 operators after being shot by her daughter, who was still in the house. Tolar said Jane Jones told the 911 operator that her daughter had shot her twice.

At the time of the shooting, Tolar said Rebecca Jones claimed she and her mother were struggling over the gun and that’s how Jane Jones ended up getting shot.

Tolar said it’s hard to have an accidental shooting with two shots, one in the upper arm and the other in the stomach.

“Rebecca never attempted to give her mother aid in any way,” Tolar said. “She left. In fact, she called her boyfriend in Alabama, not 911.”

Rebecca Jones faces life in prison without parole, if convicted.
