R.A. Hubbard’s Tarika Bowman shows her disappointment after the Chiefs lost in the Class 1A regional finals Saturday morning. Lynn defeated the Chiefs 53-43. R.A. Hubbard ends the season with a 19-6 record.

HANCEVILLE — Jackee Dodd got her Joe Namath moment.

Minutes after celebrating a regional semifinal win earlier in the week, the veteran Lynn High star guaranteed a group of reporters a win against the Bears’ longtime nemesis: R.A. Hubbard.

And just like Namath in Super Bowl III, Dodd kept her promise.

Dodd provided one of the strongest performances of the Northwest Regional, pouring in 29 points with 15 rebounds to lead Lynn past R.A. Hubbard 53-43 on Saturday morning in the Class 1A girls final.

Lynn (32-1) advances to face Keith on Tuesday in the Class 1A state semifinals — the Bears’ first Final Four appearance.

“You have to give a lot of credit to Lynn, as far as playing defense,” R.A. Hubbard coach Nicholas Vinson said. “There were a lot of shots that we normally make that didn’t fall. That hurt us. We couldn’t get into our offensive set the way we wanted to and had to rush the last four minutes because we couldn’t get into our offense.”

Lynn was making its fourth straight Northwest Regional appearance, but R.A. Hubbard, and star guard Alex Gholston, eliminated the Bears in the previous three meetings.

But fourth time was the charm.

“Alex is a great player, but me and her, we’re not friends,” said Dodd, a salty 5-foot-11 center. “Out on the floor, she’s in my ear the whole game, and I’m giving it right back to her.

“We wanted Hubbard. We wanted to put them out to get there.”

Dodd did most of her damage in the third quarter, dominating the boards while scoring 10 points during an 18-7 run that gave the Bears an eight-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

R.A. Hubbard (20-6) made a couple of runs in the fourth quarter, pulling within five twice. But Lynn squashed the Chiefs’ hopes of a comeback at the foul line, making 16 of 22 attempts in the second half.

Gholston led R.A. Hubbard with 21 points, but the Chiefs shot 29.6 percent from the field.

“Even though we lost the game, we still love this team,” Vinson said. “It’s been a pleasure for myself and my staff to coach them.

“We have enjoyed a lot of success. We have been on the other side, and we know what it feels like to win here. Now we get to experience this side of the outcome, and that’s part of it. We just have to use this experience as motivation to get better.”
