Maclin’s all-around play carries Tanner
Rattlers whip Madison Aca. for 15th win
From staff reports

TANNER — A tough slate of six games in eight days took its toll on Chris Whitt's Tanner Rattlers last week.

After a few days of rest the top-ranked team in Class 2A seems to be just fine.

Led on both ends of the floor by senior Greg Maclin, Tanner took control of visiting Madison Academy in the second half Friday night, stiffling the Mustangs offense en route to a 62-36 win that pushed the Rattlers record to 15-2.

Maclin finished with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Rattlers. More important than his offensive production, however, was what he was able to do defensively against Madison Academy's Josh Langford.

"That kid can really go," said Whitt of Langford, who finished with 16 points. "He can score in a hurry and we knew that. Greg played him about as good as he possibly could have, though. He checked him all night and really locked him down in the second half."

Leading 29-22 at the break, Tanner held the Mustangs to four points in the third quarter, blowing open what had been an otherwise close game.

"This is the best we've played so far," Whitt said. "Playing six games in eight days was rough, but they rested and rebounded nicely."

Jace Haggermaker finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Tanner, while Fred Rich added 10 points.

Nick Haas had 11 points for Madison Academy.

Austin 52, Sparkman 51: Three players reached double figures as Austin held off Sparkman to improve to 13-5. Malique Elliott had a game-high 16 points for the Black Bears, while Josh Pearson added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Camron Reedus had 11 points.

Will Crowell led all Sparkman scorers with 13 points.

Decatur 45, Muscle Shoals 33: Cameron Twitty had a game-high 12 points in the win for Decatur.

Matt Papich added 10 points for the Red Raiders, who improved to 7-12 with the win.

Ledamanian Standford had 10 points in the loss for Muscle Shoals.

Decatur will continue play today at home against Hunstville, with free admission being offered to any student who wears their red Decatur basketball camp tee shirt.

The girls will tip at 5:30 p.m., with the boys to follow.

Decatur Heritage 43, Falkville 36: Jacob Crews and Tyde Coffey scored 11 points each as Decatur Heritage pulled away late for the overtime win.

Tied at 31 after regulation, Decatur Heritage outscored Falkville 12-5 in the extra period to seal the victory.

Canaan Smith had a game-high 13 points in the win for Falkville, while Aaron Estes added 10.

Haleyville 50, Priceville 49: Marc McLendon scored 14 points in the loss for the Bulldogs (11-11). Maliq Orr and Luke Mason added eight each.

Lee Lann had 14 for Haleyville, and Trey Dennis added 13.

Priceville led 30-27 at the half.

The Bulldogs play against Brewer in the Morgan County Tournament at Priceville on Tuesday night.

Girls

Sparkman 70, Austin 53: Austin got major production from a pair of freshmen as Katie Speegle and Lauren Fitch combined to score 29 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the high-powered Sparkman offense.

Speegle had a team-high 19 points for the Black Bears (15-6), while Fitch added 10.

Alexis Jennings had a game-high 26 points for Sparkman. Toni Brewer (16) and Malya Rumph (10) also reached double figures for the Senators.

Austin will continue play Monday against Class 5A Wenonah in the Martin Luther King Classic at Samford University.

Brewer 61, Columbia 26: The top-ranked Patriots clinched the regular season Class 5A, Area 12 title with a win against Columbia.

Brewer (21-1, 6-0 in Area 12) had two players record double-doubles. Riley Northway poured in 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Savana Flack added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Brewer built a 35-16 lead by halftime.

Mallerie Drinkard finished with 10 points for Brewer, while Rheagan Harvel added eight points and seven assists.

Priceville 63, Haleyville 32: Jada Beverly had a game-high 30 points in the win for Priceville.

McKenzie Parker and Brianna Gwin each had eight points for the Bulldogs (9-14, 4-2), while Kayla Lucas added seven points and eight rebounds.

Tori Pendley had 12 points in the loss for Haleyville, while Alli Orear added 10.
