TANNER — A tough slate of six games in eight days took its toll on Chris Whitt's Tanner Rattlers last week.
After a few days of rest the top-ranked team in Class 2A seems to be just fine.
Led on both ends of the floor by senior Greg Maclin, Tanner took control of visiting Madison Academy in the second half Friday night, stiffling the Mustangs offense en route to a 62-36 win that pushed the Rattlers record to 15-2.
Maclin finished with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Rattlers. More important than his offensive production, however, was what he was able to do defensively against Madison Academy's Josh Langford.
"That kid can really go," said Whitt of Langford, who finished with 16 points. "He can score in a hurry and we knew that. Greg played him about as good as he possibly could have, though. He checked him all night and really locked him down in the second half."
Leading 29-22 at the break, Tanner held the Mustangs to four points in the third quarter, blowing open what had been an otherwise close game.
"This is the best we've played so far," Whitt said. "Playing six games in eight days was rough, but they rested and rebounded nicely."
Jace Haggermaker finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Tanner, while Fred Rich added 10 points.
Nick Haas had 11 points for Madison Academy.
Austin 52, Sparkman 51: Three players reached double figures as Austin held off Sparkman to improve to 13-5. Malique Elliott had a game-high 16 points for the Black Bears, while Josh Pearson added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Camron Reedus had 11 points.

Sparkman 70, Austin 53: Austin got major production from a pair of freshmen as Katie Speegle and Lauren Fitch combined to score 29 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the high-powered Sparkman offense.
Speegle had a team-high 19 points for the Black Bears (15-6), while Fitch added 10.
Alexis Jennings had a game-high 26 points for Sparkman. Toni Brewer (16) and Malya Rumph (10) also reached double figures for the Senators.
