A Huntsville man has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Decatur resident Jose Ruiz, whose body was found in a field near the Speake community earlier this month.
Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said Ruiz, 32, was found dead on County Road 84 on March 4. Authorities developed Jaime Roman Romero, 41, of 3003 Mallory Avenue, Huntsville, as a suspect after finding evidence that linked him to the crime.
Romero was arrested Monday after police conducted a search of his Huntsville home. Mitchell said the investigation is ongoing.
Lawrence County Coroner Scott Norwood said last week the body was sent to the Alabama State Forensics Office in Huntsville for an autopsy. Ruiz, who was a roofing contractor, was found by two men scouting hunting land last week.
Romero is being held in Lawrence County Jail with no bail set. Mitchell said residents who have information about the crime can contact the sheriff’s office at 256-974-9291.
