Oakland Raiders linebacker and Decatur native Rolando McClain leaves the Decatur City Jail on Tuesday after posting bail for a charge of giving a false name to law enforcement.

Officers arrested NFL player Rolando McClain on a charge of giving a false name to law enforcement Tuesday after he signed a citation for overly dark window tint as “(Expletive) y’all,” Decatur police said.

When a patrol supervisor asked McClain to put his real name on the ticket, McClain told the sergeant, “That is my name,” said police spokesman Lt. John Crouch.

Crouch said McClain, 23, who was booked into Decatur City Jail shortly after 4 p.m. on the misdemeanor and the window tint violation, could have avoided arrest simply by signing his name to the ticket.

He was released on $1,000 cash bail a short time later.

“I’m falsely accused of everything,” the Oakland Raiders linebacker said before climbing into his white Chevrolet Silverado Z-71 and driving from the parking lot of City Hall. “It’s corrupt. It’s terrible.”

Under Alabama law, a person commits a crime if he gives a false name to an officer “with intent to mislead the officer.”

It was the second time in just over a year that the former Decatur High player and University of Alabama All-American has had a run-in with the law in his hometown.

In November 2011, McClain was accused of assaulting former friend Rishard Tapscott.

A video of the fight that led to McClain’s arrest surfaced in May, but the video did not show McClain striking Tapscott, brandishing a firearm, firing it near Tapscott’s ear or threatening to kill him, though those allegations were among complaints filed by Tapscott in court.

McClain was convicted of all charges and handed a six-month jail sentence in May, but following appeal of the case to circuit court, a judge dismissed the case in November after Tapscott decided to drop the charges, according to court records.

Asked if he believes police are out to get him, McClain said, “Yes. You said it. I answered it.”

Police said officer Derek Annerton was unable to recognize the driver when he met the southbound Silverado on Central Parkway Southwest.

“The tint was so dark that he immediately recognized that it was darker than what’s allowed by law. He couldn’t tell anything about the driver — couldn’t tell if it was male or female,” Crouch said.

Annerton did not recognize McClain until after McClain had pulled over on Corsbie Street Southeast and rolled his window down, Crouch said.

Crouch said when Annerton asked for a driver’s license and proof of insurance, McClain said, “You know who I am.”

McClain told the officer he had a letter from his doctor about the window tint, which he later produced. The printed letter stated he had “photosensitivity and needed maximum ultraviolet radiation protection to include window tinting,” Crouch said.

Annerton asked him twice to roll the window up partially so he could check the tint, and McClain refused both times, Crouch said.

“He tells the officer he’s got a letter from his doctor and that’s all he needs,” Crouch said.

Annerton called for a supervisor to meet him, and Sgt. Stan Elliott responded.
McClain eventually did roll up his window enough for Annerton to use a tint meter, which measures how much light can go through the window, and determine the tint was too dark, Crouch said.

“Sgt. Elliott told McClain that type of doctor’s recommendation should have been written on a medical prescription, to which McClain responded that Sgt. Elliott was not the officer that stopped him, so McClain didn’t have anything to say to him,” Crouch said.

Elliott told McClain he would be issued a ticket and could present any doctor’s orders on his court date.

“McClain took (the ticket) and appeared to sign it, but when officer Annerton got the ticket book back, he saw that McClain had written ‘(Expletive) y’all’ instead of signing his name,” Crouch said.

After McClain refused to sign his real name, Annerton and Elliott arrested him on the false information charge and took him to jail.

The vehicle was turned over to a female passenger.

Arrogant , disrespectful, problem with authority and the rules don't apply to me. Will never change. Fine up standing young man!

that female looks like she proud to be with him.

He is a linebacker for a Pro Football team, but he can supposedly cough up a dr's orders that he "needs" to have darker than legal tint due to photo sensitivity.

Sounds like BS to me. Guess all the bright lights at the stadium burned out some of his brain cells and he is more important than anyone else in Decatur.

Make sure his court date is during his football seasons so he misses a game and doesnt get paid! I bet he didn't have that attitude with Nick Sabin he would have sent him packing back to Decatur. He puts a stain on Decatur every time he gets in trouble!

Wonder what the NFL Commish will do?

What a worthless, STUPID thug.

Stay out of Decatur, don't sound like you have much luck wherever you go...jus sayin!

Man, Rolando! Just realize that your pride keeps setting you up for a fall! You may have made it above where many people make it, but that doesn't make you "above" anyone else OR the law. It's great that you're a Raider, but instead of showing yourself to be a superstar, you keep proving that you're super-stupid. Just comply with law like the rest of us so (all of) Decatur can look forward to you coming home instead of dreading it! Son, success is not just seizing an opportunity; it is more so how you execute it. Ditch the arrogance before it takes everything away from you.

He must like the corndogs srved in Decatur jail. How did he get so stupid in just so many short years?

Roll Tide

To many shots to the head must have caused MASSIVE dain bamage in this BOY. I say BOY because he still has not learned how to be a MAN. I don't know who he thinks he is to say "You know who I am", Not everyone in Decatur knows you and right now I would bet most folks wish they have never heard of you and are sad to say you are from Decatur. For our childrens sake please stay away so you don't set a bad example for our children.

Although I don't really disagree with all the above comments, I will bet you this could have been handled better by the Police Dept as well as himself. I wonder if this young man is not disappointed that his town is not proud of him. He is young and he is high strung and we know he does not have any family support or raising. Just seems like we could try to help him learn how to act not bad mouth him and make his every move a news story. bring on the nasty remarks if you must, this is just a parents opinion.

He must want to prove you can take the kid out of the ghetto but not the ghetto out of the kid. He should just take his money and buy his people a place to stay somewhere else Decatur doesn't need him. If he doesn't leave now when he finally gets kicked off the team or injured he will be back with that same attitude but that is where you will be able to get your dope. As far as the doctors note for the tint really??? what a stupid excuse. My opinion is we don't need people like this in any sport teaching kids to act like this is horrible. He could do with know he is one injury away from him mama's couch.

He will be back in decatur just like his friends selling dope and stayin in trouble he can not seem to stay out of decatur or trouble been that way his whole life. worthless thug trash no hope for it - just will not give up the thug trash life

Total trash

The cops have always had it out for Rolando! This racist task force needs some leadership and some morals. Just because a black athlete has done more in his life than ya'll ever would, doesn't give you the right to try to keep the man down! Shame on all ya'll!

He is nothing but a thug and he needs to stay away from Decatur. I realize he is from here but all you do when you are here is get in trouble. And NO, I am not playing the race card. If a white person did what he has done, I would say the same thing. A thug is a thug no matter the color of their skin.

Pure thug...Has proved it over and over!

nice to see another ignorant racist DA rant by NW Resident again!!! Keep it classy NW!!!!!

He brings it on himself. I would not know him if I saw him. If he needs the attention, he could get it in so many better ways.

Who's Rolando McClain?

McClain has always been a pos. wonder how much of this went on in college that was covered up. He is spoiled, arrogant and stupid. You'd think that if he always get in trouble in Decatur, he'd stay away. Again the guy is a pos, always was and always will be.

This nothing more than a case of "Contempt of Cop". Providing a false name was just an excuse to arrest him because they wouldn't obey their mighty police commands. Rolondo might be a THUG and an jerk... but this was police abuse of power.

.

They wrote him his ticket... and when he didn't "respect them", they decided to arrest him. what a joke. All this crap over window tinting?

I hope this young man stays healthy and strong so he can have a long and prosperous football career. That's the only thing that will keep him out of Decatur except for the occassional visit. If he's ever injured or fired, he'll wind up living here permanently sporting a bitter "I was once a NFL star" attitude living the life of the thug he is.

In the meantime, it would serve us all very well if, when he does come here and does stupid stuff, it winds up being nothing more than a sentence on the police blotter page. Putting his picture in the paper along with an article just feeds his ego. Let's ignore his ego, treat him like any other idiot and maybe he'll go elsewhere for his ego-fix.

Oh...and as for that cross pendant hanging around his neck...it obviously has no significant meaning to him. A big, gold dollar sign would be more appropriate.

the entitlement folk Obama has generated think they do not have to obey any laws because he is president -pretty sad mess this country is in , and ro ro is a fine example of where it is headed

You need to stay out of the City of Decatur and Morgan County. It seem like you locking for trouple. What hapen to you since you became a professional Football Player. No respect for the LAW ??.

So what doctor did he pay off to get that bogus doctor excuse.

I see "Northwest Resident" finally came to RoRo's defense. Figures.

What I really appreciate are the Bama fans on here who would have took a bullet for him 3 years ago, but as soon as he's done with the Tahd, he's a thug!

Ro, Ro, Ro your boat genly down the stream.

Hey Ro, You better get a anchor and turn your boat around before it hit the rocks for good.

I bought a car from bill heard chevrolet and drove it for 5 years I got a ticket for the window tint being too dark. Even though I bought it this way it was still too dark. I accepted my ticket put my name on the ticket then took it to a tint place and they took the tint off and replaced it it cost 75.00 went to court and because I had corrected the problem it was thrown out of court. It is amazing how easy it was because I wasn't a thug smart a???

maybe rolando needs a strong male figure in his life to teach him the difference in a self absorbed boy and a real man. Kicking butt on the football feild does not make you a man necessarily. Maybe AJ McCarron could teach him that being respectful and giving of yourself to the less fortunate is what makes a man a man. With all Ro's money, there is so much good he could do for those in need, ie, his own people. The self respect he would gain from that would make him happier than all the money and arrogance in the world. The boy needs guidance!

this is what happens when 2 jerks meet

when was the last time any of you purchased a # turkeys for the holdiays? Heck yeah the officer knew who it was. It is a shame that this community is finding a way to push a troubled individidul away rather than improve him. He made a nice trophy on the wall of the officer.

I don't think this is a Alabama-Auburn thing. It's a thug thing.

Please keep him away from pool parties!

I don't think this is a Alabama-Auburn thing. It's a thug thing.

Please keep him away from pool parties!

He's a moron

If DD and others would quit giving him press time maybe he would stay away.

The police have the option to take you in and require you to post bail for any traffic violation. Normally you can avoid the hassle for both you and the officer by signing an acknowledgement at the scene saying you received the ticket and understand it is a summons to traffic court. If you refuse to properly sign the citation/summons they have no choice but to haul you in. Otherwise they have no case when it comes up in court because you can claim you were never properly served with a summons.

A lot of the residents of the Decatur area would love to be able to say how proud we are of Rolando as one of our own, like we do with other sports figures such as Benny Perrin, Gary Reedus, and Jerraud Powers.

Many people in this town have gone well out of their way to help Rolando to succeed in life as well as football, but he has refused to help himself. When he was growing up here a family in no way related to him opened the doors of their home to provide a decent place to live. Others who didn't have to were supportive as well. Many of us were even willing to overlook a couple of incidents because of the possibility they were a result of someone else seeking a little notoriety. But Rolando has proven over and over where the problem lies. He refuses to be an adult and follow the same rules as everyone else is expected to. He would rather have the admiration and approval of a few street thugs than society at large. If he insists on behaving in such a manner, that is all he will get.

Apparently, yall don't keep up with the Raiders....Rolando hasn't played much at all this year and has been suspended from practice and play at least once. If he keeps up this Billy Bad Butt attitude, no one is gonna touch him with a ten foot pole.

Wonder what his BlindSide daddy thinks of all this?

Mary, with all due resepct, how in the world could the police have handeled it better? They see a violation, they stop and investigate and from the get-go he does not cooperate. So, since you threw it out there, just how could they have handeled it better??

Who cares? It's his car, his tint. Is that is the only thing that cops have to do in this town? Everyday there's a shooting or a bank getting robbed and they're harassing people over tinted windows. I don't care if he's arrogant or not- he's right. With all the crime in this town they could surely find a more productive way to serve their community. And for the record, the average citizen is ten times more respectable than the muppets in uniform that call themselves police officers. If you want to talk about arrogance or thinking one is above the law, look at Decatur's law enforcement.

Bob, Contempt of cop? Let me explain tyhe the law to your crystal ball know it all self...If you recieve a traffic ticket you must sign the ticket with your name. When you do this you are releasing yourself on bond and agreeing to either appear in court or to pay the ticket prior to the court date. You can either sign it, or not sign it and be taken to jail and booked for the traffic violation and reeased on bond there. If you sign the ticket by anything other thatn your name, under the law it is giving false information. I suggest that you got to Code of Alabama 1975 and do research before you research. Clearly by your remarks you are a hater of the police. Window tint is a serious violation, more police officers are killed on traffic stops than any other offense. Dark tint hides the movements of occupants in the vehicle, it also hides discriptions of drivers invovled in criminal offenses. So, it aint crapp buddy boy.

And to Carolyn,

Another know it all that was there, so you have the gift to see through dark tinted windows, good for you, sign up for the citizens academy at the police department so you can ride with the officers so you can identifiy who is driving vehicles with tinted windows. While there, pay attention to the part that no matter who it is in society, no matter how much money they have, they are not ABOVE THE LAW no matter who they are. Mr. McClain did not cooperate, and thgat is all he had to do. GIVE ME A BREAK!

Also, if the state insists on passing bulls**t laws like regulating window tint, why shouldn't citizens produce bulls**t papers to get around those laws. Or is it a one-way street? Every year the police are handed more and more authority by the state while the people sit back, actually believing it is for their own safety and do nothing to assert their rights. Pathetic on both sides.

Kenneth, a cop hater, you know so much, sign up and show them what to do, So our officers sworn to uphold the law are now suppose to ignore enforcement of laws that you don't agree with? You critics on here kill me, but buddy when you need help, you will be the first to be glad to see them.

All Ro Ro had to do was sign the ticket. He refused and sifgned profanity instead. His arrogance and disrespect for the law is why he was arrested. He is 100% responsible here. I bet if he goes before a judge he will have a better attitude.

If the cops have it in for you why cometo Decatur? Just stupid it seems. Thug.

He wasn't arrested for the traffic ticket. He was arrested for "giving false information to police". Don't preach the law when you can't get what he was arrested for straight.

What is the record number of posts on Decatur Daily comments? DD do some research and find out.

Thor, please produce the # of people pulled over for not speeding but just a tint check in Decatur on a regular basis?

Bob I would classify "giving false information" as arrogance and disrespect for the law. I even said . . "His arrogance and disrespect for the law is why he was arrested". I never said it was the ticket. Quit splitting hairs and pretending to be a lawyer.

he is what he is!!!

It is really sad that he is ruining a good thing because he has a ~bad attitude~ he needs some self control. And he needs a good old fashion butt whoopin! Maybe he will wake up before his career is shot!

Carolyn, I don't have to produce anything for you dear, it is against the law to have it, it is the officers responsibility to stop and investigate. Comprende'?
