AUBURN — Multiple news organizations are reporting that Gene Chizik is out as Auburn head coach.
The Auburn-Opelika News reported on its website that Chizik had been fired. Al.com reported that Chizik had been fired and was informing players in a team meeting.
Auburn capped its worst season in 60 years with a 49-0 loss to rival Alabama on Saturday.
“That was a very disappointing and embarrassing loss to our in-state rivals,” said Chizik, who is 38-38 as a head coach, including 33-19 at Auburn. “It was a sad performance, and the Auburn fans and the Auburn alumni don’t deserve that.”
Chizik is under contract through 2015 and earns $3.5 million annually but has a buyout in his contract which will depreciate to $7.5 million on Dec. 1 and would be paid in monthly installments for the remaining term of the deal.
University President Jay Gogue had been expected to make a decision on whether to keep or fire Chizik today or Monday.
The Tigers finished 3-9 this season. Auburn lost all eight Southeastern Conference games two years after winning a national title. It's the worst two-year fall of any Associated Press national champion.
The Tigers lost their final three SEC games by a combined 150-21.
Cam Newton led them to a 14-0 season and the program's first national title since 1957 two years ago.
