ATHENS — Class 5A No. 1 Hartselle turned back an upset bid by Athens, scoring 16 fourth quarter points for a 23-8 victory tonight.
Hunter Hammack's 15-yard field goal early in the fourth helped the Tigers regain the lead 10-8, and Jaylon Jackson's interception return gave Hartselle breathing room with a 17-8 lead.
The Golden Eagles used a safety and touchdown to forge an 8-7 halftime lead over their Class 5A, Region 8 rival.
Johnnie Anderson made the tackle for the safety that cut Hartselle’s lead to 7-2 and then he caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Harper Ward on third-and-20. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
