On the court with Emily Williams

With a new coach and a young team, the Priceville Lady Bulldogs have one senior to lean on this year for leadership.

Priceville coach Catrina Mason has depended Emily Williams to be a coach on the court this season.

Williams has led the Lady Bulldogs, 20-21 overall, to a Class 4A, Area 15 regular season title.

Mason said Williams has a good all-around game. The 5-foot, 6-inch senior is 92 percent on serves, hitting 377 of 412 his season. She has 281 digs, averaging about seven per match, and 151 kills, averaging 3.7 per match.

Priceville will host the Area 15 tournament Thursday that includes East Lawrence, Haleyville and Brooks.

Mason described Williams, a two-sport athlete, as “bubbly and outgoing.”

Williams met with Decatur Daily sports writer Bayne Hughes on Monday to answer these five questions:

Question: What is it like to the team’s only senior?

Answer: It seems like it would be difficult, but it hasn’t been. Everyone has worked hard and we’re really coming together as a team. They know how serious I am about volleyball and practicing hard.

With a new coach, I’ve had to show them some of the drills we used to do. They’ve been very welcoming in learning how we do things.

Q: How do you think your team will do in at the area tournament?

A: We know we can beat some teams pretty high up so we feel we are one of the better teams now. We feel we’ve got a great chance if we play our game.

Q: Do you prefer volleyball or softball?

A: Volleyball is my favorite. You have to wait for the ball to be hit to you in softball, and you’re not a part of all of the action. Volleyball is more of a team game, and it’s definitely a game of constant motion.

Q: Halloween is almost here, so what is more scary — vampire or werewolf?

A: A werewolf is more scary. A werewolf would probably chew you up and spit you out. If a vampire is like the “Twilight” series, you can stay and love a vampire. Vampires seem nicer.

Q: What is your favorite music and group?

A: I prefer pop and R&B. My favorite group is Boys 2 Men. I know I’m young, but I love their music.
